We extend a warm welcome to ICLEI' Oceania’s newest member, the Kiribati Local Government Association (KiLGA), also known as Aia Rabwata Kauntira. The LGA supports local government services and networks in Kiribati and the Pacific.

As a member of ICLEI, KiLGA is part of a global network of more than 1,750 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Active in 100+ countries, we influence sustainability policy and drive local action for low emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient and circular development.

“We are looking forward to supporting and learning from KiLGA and their 23 member councils, through knowledge exchange, building capacity, and providing technical assistance for the implementation of the SDGs and other local programs,” said Steve Gawler, ICLEI Oceania Regional Director.

KiLGA was formed in 2012 by the 23 Mayors representing their Councils in Kiribati. KiLGA is recognised by the central government as the NGO responsible for providing support to both urban and rural Councils.

Kiribati is located in the Pacific Ocean with a permanent population of just over 110,000, of whom over half live on the Tarawa atoll. While it is a tiny country, it has responsibility for a huge 3.5 million square kilometres of ocean under its Economic Exclusion Zone.
