Telica Volcano Hike

Telica is another active volcano and one of the least explored in Nicaragua. Besides reaching the crater at the top this hike will allow us to observe several other volcanoes lined up, some smoking and others dormant.

The latest violent eruption from telica volcano was in 1948, however it has ever since been smoking and grumbling. So far it hold the title of the largest number of eruptions in the recent history of Nicaragua. The top of the crater sits at over 1000 meters and it is possible to peak into the crater and some times see lava.

The adventure begins walking across a mud pots area following a dirt and rocky path only accessible by foot or by horse. We hike in the direction of the mountain right behind San Jacinto village through a beautiful valley with grassland, trees, and rocks.

This hike can be tough and quite tiring as it takes aprox four hours to reach the crater, here you’ll really get an off-road feeling, however you will be able to have great panoramic views from the top over the Maribios volcanic chain with 5 of the 7 Nicaragua’s active volcanoes. After a photo session we continue our adventure hiking down toward our vehicle for the ride back to the city.

If you don’t have much time or you lack physical condition, then there is an easier option in which we follow a different trail using a 4×4 vehicle to take you up and down. The actual hike on this part is not that hard as it never get steep so the walk can only take 50 minutes to the top and the same amoung of time  to get back down.
