Euphorbia rigida (Upright Myrtle Spurge) is an erect, then spreading, evergreen perennial with upright ascending stems clad with fleshy, blue-green leaves arranged in close spirals. Through the spring months, it produces small clusters of star-shaped yellow-green flowers within a collar of chartreuse to bright yellow bracts, sometimes suffused with pink. The foliage sometimes tinges bronze or red in cold weather. The stems exude a milky sap that can be irritating so wear gloves when handling.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its outstanding qualities
  • Typically grows up to 12-24 in. tall (30-60 cm) and 24-36 in. wide (60-90 cm)
  • Performs best in full sun in dry to medium, well-drained soils. Tolerates some light shade. It is drought tolerant and does well in poor, sandy or rocky soils.
  • Great for rock gardens, coastal gardens, Mediterranean Gardens, banks and slopes, underplanting shrubs and roses, containers.
  • Remaining attractive during all its growing season, this remarkable plant is resilient to most pests and diseases, is salt tolerant, deer resistant and is easy to care for.
  • Propagate by division.
  • Self-seeds freely if not deadheaded. Cut off old stems to the base when the flowers start to fade to prevent reseeding.
  • Native to Southern Europe, Southwestern Asia.
  • All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested. The milky sap may cause irritation to skin and eyes.
