Paeonia lutea or the Yellow Tree Peony is a herbaceous perennial that develops eventually into a woody shrub.
It has deep green shapely leaves and large saucer-shaped golden rose like flowers that can be up to 12 cms across which appear in spring and summer.
They have a woody rootstock and will happily survive for decades if not disturbed.
Paeony lutea Ludlowii is one of the most popular and available in nurseries, featuring brighter yellow flowers with deep golden stamen.
