The beautifully patterned Sand's Corydoras davidsandsi comes from a tributary of the Rio Negro in Brazil. Sand's Corydoras is characterized by its unusual pattern. The fish is silvery pink to yellowish in base color and has two intense black, relatively clearly defined stripes: one running from top to bottom over the eye on the head and a diagonal black stripe that starts in the dorsal fin and runs to the lower base of the caudal fin. On the rather short mouth of Corydoras davidsandsi are the pairs of barbels typical of a Corydoras.
Males tend to be more slender than females in Corydoras davidsandsi, and they only grow to about 5 cm in length, while the more plump females can reach up to 6 cm in body length. Sand's Corydoras is a gregarious, highly social group fish that needs conspecifics around it and for this reason should be kept in a group of at least 5-10 individuals. Sand's Coryfish prefers the lower area of the aquarium. As an intestinal breather, it needs to rise to the surface of the water to catch its breath, so make sure the fish always has free access to the top.
Corydoras davidsandsi is an extremely peaceful contemporary that not only gets along very well with each other, but also gets along well with other aquarium fish. The tank mates should be small to medium sized and peaceful. Keeping with dwarf shrimp is also possible without any problems, Sands Tank Catfish does not actively hunt. Shrimp babies are eaten only if they practically walk directly into the mouth of the armored catfish. Socialization of this cory with crayfish, on the other hand, can be difficult because Corydoras davidsandsi, like crayfish, also occupies the lower water layers. Not only can there be fights over the best burrows and injuries to the fish, but larger crayfish may also view the Sand's Corydoras as prey.
Sand's Cory is considered relatively easy to breed. In the community tank, however, there will never be more than random breedings, a targeted breeding requires a separate breeding aquarium. Breeding pairs of Corydoras are fed richly: Live food and high-quality frozen food stimulate spawning. One or more large water changes with cooler, softer water often trigger courtship. The eggs of Corydoras davidsandsi are very sticky, and the female attaches them to all kinds of surfaces in the aquarium after mating. After the eggs are laid, the parents are returned to their actual aquarium so that they do not eat the spawn and later the larvae. The larvae of Sand's Cory are fed with Artemia nauplii in the rearing tank.
Sand's Cory can live 8 to 10 years in good conditions. In soft to medium hard water and a pH of 6-7,5 as well as a water temperature of 22-26 °C Corydoras davidsandsi feels well. The aquarium should have from 54 cm length, larger groups must be in larger tanks. A sandy substrate, very fine gravel or a sandy corner are advantageous for the Corydoras, because here they can search for food according to their species . For this purpose they dig with their head in the sand and chew the ground. Hiding places in the form of caves, roots and plants should be offered to the beautiful aquarium fish in any case.
Sand's Cory is a typical omnivore with a preference for food of animal origin. Worms, insect larvae, but also plant remains and algae belong to its natural diet. Suitable foods include live and frozen foods, as well as food tabs or cookies for armored catfish, and even just regular commercial flake food or granulated food for omnivorous aquarium fish in a community aquarium.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Catfish Feed is a professionally formulated complete food especially for all sucking catfish. The food tabs contain important dietary fibers such as chitin and plant fibers, which are essential for the survival of catfish for a well-functioning digestion. With strong proteins from insect larvae as well as carbohydrate-rich vegetables NatureHolic Catfish Feed provides all sucking catfish optimally with all important building materials for a fast and healthy growth. The extra hard chips can be scraped off by the catfish close to nature - here they really have to do something for their food! An occupation like in nature.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
