After Daisuke Aramaki and Motoko Kusanagi, Batou is second-in-command of Public Security Section 9, an elite counter-terrorist unit. A full cyborg with a 100% prosthetic body, Batou still posses human qualities and enjoys lifting weights as a hobby even though his artificial muscles derive no benefit from the exercise. Although his characterization changes slightly in his manga, film, and television appearances, he is generally portrayed as an extroverted and emotional foil to Major Kusanagi's calm, detached method of leadership. Prone to angry outbursts, he is also loyal and friendly, as shown by his preference and devotion to a particular robotic AI tank, even though the tanks are theoretically identical.
Prior to his position with Section 9, Batou was a Ranger in the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force.
