2009 Jeff Kravitz

According to reports, after friends couldn't reach him for days, police found his body--face down--allegedly with a crack pipe and "unspecified prescription bottles" nearby in his seventh-floor New York City apartment. He was said to be shirtless, lying in bed.

In 2008, DJ AM told his story to Glamour's Laurie Sandell about his drug-fueled youth, troubled upbringing and struggle with obesity (he said he weighed 324 pounds at the age of 30). (P.S. Read Laurie's touching tribute to Adam on her blog--warning, you may tear up, as I did.) His turning point came when reaching rock bottom after a crack-fueled evening when he held a gun to his head.

"The gun didn't go off," he said. "I thought, Are you kidding me? I'm such a f--king failure I can't even kill myself? I dropped the gun and broke down. For an hour I sat there sobbing, saying, 'God help me. What am I supposed to do?' A friend I'd held on to from the few recovery meetings I'd attended happened to stop by my house to check on me: He took one look around my disgusting apartment, one look at me and said, 'You're coming home with me.' That was the turning point in my life."

The road ahead wasn't always smooth, however. In September of last year he was seriously injured in a tragic plane crash that killed four people in Columbia, South Carolina.

DJ AM's many friends--including his famous exes Nicole Ritchie and Mandy Moore--are no doubt reeling in the face of this news, as are we.

Rest in peace, Adam.
