And it's all Paul Rudd's fault.

Friends fans know that the gang racked up a lot of ex-boyfriends and -girlfriends throughout the series. But none stand out as much as David, Phoebe's lovable scientist boyfriend. After years apart, however—thanks, Minsk—Phoebe ended up with Mike, played by the always-charming, never-aging Paul Rudd. And even though they made a perfect pair, it was hard to forget brainy-but-romantic David the Scientist.

But actor Hank Azaria, who played David, has some crushing news for those of us who were always Team Scientist: David and Phoebe actually almost ended up together. We'll just let that sink in for a sec.

....

Anyway, the actor spoke to the Huffington Post about his recent Emmy nomination for his role in Ray Donovan—and also revealed that he didn’t realize David’s departure for Minsk meant the end of his character arc. According to Azaria, the plan was always for David to return and for he and Phoebe to live happily ever after, but Rudd was just too damn charming to cut from the show.

“I think, honestly, what happened was Paul Rudd is so awesome that they sort of found a groove with him, and [my character] became more of just the grist for that mill,” said Azaria.

We know, we know: You’re imagining David, with those adorable/ridiculous glasses, looking heartbroken and forlorn over the one that got away. But he’s just a fictional character, right? No real heartbreak to mourn over. Except for the fact that Azaria went on to say he was pretty bummed about how it played out.

“It actually did sting a little bit,” said Azaria. “Whatever part of me is David the science guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me, but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn’t.”

Before your heart falls out of your chest, Azaria did note that in the end he approved of the decision to stick with Rudd, saying, “He certainly has gone on to prove that he was comedically deserving of Phoebe’s love.”

But that doesn’t mean Azaria's not equally baffled by how Rudd can be so damn likable and good looking (stars—they're just like us): “He’s a handsome devil. He’s actually annoyingly handsome. He shouldn’t really be allowed to be that handsome. He’s like the Tom Brady of comedy.”

Our hearts will forever be torn.
