Priscilla is the moment.
Sure, in 2022, we were very much in a place of Elvis, given Austin Butler’s Oscar-nominated performance in the buzzy Baz Luhrmann biopic about the rock music legend. But now it’s 2023, and director Sofia Coppola very much wants us to be in a place of Priscilla Presley, actor, businesswoman, and Elvis Presley’s ex-wife.
Priscilla herself, now 78, played a major role behind the scenes of Elvis (she was played by Olivia DeJonge), and she’s also played a crucial role in Priscilla: The film is based on her 1985 book Elvis and Me.
Priscilla is expected to hit theaters later this year. Here’s everything we know about the movie so far:

The Oscar-nominated director has helmed stylish, introspective female-centric films throughout her career, including The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, and The Bling Ring.
“I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland,” Coppola told Vogue in 2022. “She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world—kinda similar to Marie Antoinette.” In the same interview Coppola revealed that Priscilla herself is an executive producer on the film.
The 24-year-old actor is best known for roles in HBO’s Mare of Easttown, the FX sci-fi series Devs, and The Craft: Legacy.

It will be nearly impossible to top what Austin Butler did in 2022’s Elvis, but this film is not really about Elvis, so it’s fine. To commemorate the announcement of his role last year, the actor shared a black and white picture of Elvis on his Instagram grid with the simple caption, “E.”

Priscilla is not simply ripped from Priscilla Presley’s Wikipedia page. The film is based on Priscilla’s own memoir, Elvis & Me, which was cowritten with Sandra Harmon. The book was released in 1985. The book details Priscilla’s relationship with Elvis from the very beginning and through the throes of his fame, which ultimately led to their divorce in 1973.
Per A24, the film will hit theaters in October 2023.
