Rito

The rito are a proud race of avian humanoids.
Often living in villages on or near mountains,
the rito are acclimated to the cold temperatures
which are common in those areas. Despite
being winged, the rito can’t fly on their own.
Instead, the rito glide from high places, and
use naturally occurring updrafts to fly. Beyond
their physical appearance, rito are also known
for their talent in archery and musical arts.

Rito Traits

As a rito, you gain the following abilities, arising
from your people's ancestry and tradition:

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score
increases by 2.

Age. Rito reach adulthood in their mid-teens and live up to 70 years.

Alignment. Rito are a race who highly emphasize freedom, individuality, and art, causing them to lean toward the gentler aspects of chaos. Usually caring for others, they are more often good than not.

Size. Rito range from about 5 and a half feet to just about 7 feet. Your size is Medium.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Snowquill. Thanks to your feathers and natural insulation, you have resistance to cold damage. You're also naturally adapted to cold climates.

Winged. Even though the rito are winged, they are too heavy to lift themselves high off the ground. Instead, they glide from high locations, using naturally occurring updrafts to gain altitude, beyond the small amount they can naturally. You gain a gliding speed of 40 feet while not wearing medium or heavy armor. While you have a glide speed, if you are falling and aren't incapacitated you can slow your decent to at least 5 feet per turn, and you can move up to 5 feet horizontally for every 1 foot you descend using your gliding speed.

While gliding, if you're at least 10 feet above the ground, you may rise up to a number of feet equal to your strength score. Each foot you rise costs a foot of gliding speed. Once you rise in this way, you must end your turn on the ground before doing so again.

Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Rito. (If Rito isn't a language in your world, you gain one extra language of your choice instead.)

Subrace. The rito are divided by training and profession. Choose one of these subraces.
