The In-Laws From Hell!

Here to Stay is a psychological thriller about a newlywed couple whose marriage spirals into the depths of hell after their in-laws move in.

Elliot has led a conservative life. He runs an educational non-profit and spends his spare time restoring his beautiful Victorian house on Cuckoo Lane. After a near-death experience, he decides to embrace life and proposes to his girlfriend of 3 months, Gemma. Shortly after they wed, Gemma’s parents move in along with Gemma’s younger sister, Chloe. They are only supposed to stay a few weeks, but clearly, have no intention of ever leaving. Eliot soon realizes Gemma and her family are not who they initially seem. They are keeping dark and deadly secrets and will push Elliot to the brink, causing him to take extreme measures to solve his in-law problem and save his marriage.

This is a fun and fast-paced thriller that takes the idea of crazy in-laws to another level! As always, Mark Edwards throws in some unexpected twists and turns. Elliot’s transformation was intriguing and the final sentence left me reeling!

Elliott is a 38 year old scientist that lives a regimented life with Charlie his cat. One day, during a public viewing of his garden, he meets the lovely Gemma and they seem to hit off. Within two months they are married and she is living in his very well-to-do home. Not long after it seems her parents and younger sister are relocating from France and are coming to stay for just a few days until they can find a place of their own.

A few days turns to into a few weeks turns into an absolute nightmare.

If I could describe this book in one word it would be: Preposterous.

If Elliott is a scientist then he may have been blessed with brains but he was clearly not blessed with any common sense or a backbone for that matter. How he let this situation escalate to the level he did is beyond ridiculous. And the in-laws, they are a nasty bunch, but they were almost comical in their depiction. My reading experience is best described as roll my eyes, skim, roll my eyes, skim which isn't a very satisfying experience. In my opinion it took far too long to tell this story and I had already figured out the twist so getting to the end was a chore at best. This is my 2nd book by this author and I think it is safe to say he isn't for me. I am happy to see that so many do love his work and I do wish him continued success in the future.

Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Well the premise to this one sure got MY heart thumping!😱

Newly married, Elliot and Gemma have barely returned from their whirlwind wedding and honeymoon when Gemma asks if her parents and sister can stay in their home for a couple weeks. Her family are moving from France and just need a bit of time to get back on their feet and find a permanent home.

What’s Elliot supposed to do…say no to his new bride? Not a chance! And really, anyone one can put up with almost anything for just a few short weeks, right? Ha! That theory is about to be put to the test!

Elliot is shocked when he realizes Gemma’s family have no intention of moving out! And of course the law is on their side! The deeper Gemma’s family digs their heels in, the higher Elliot’s (and my) blood pressure rose.

Think twice before you have someone stay over in your home! Would it be rude to have your family/friends sign a contract to make sure they vacate after a few days? Too tacky?😜

A fast-paced thriller with short chapters that I blew through in a couple seatings. My third book by this author and certainly looking forward to more! And he has plenty for me to choose from!

Mark Edwards is back with another of his spine-tingling thrillers that keeps the reader wondering throughout. Elliot Foster enjoys a quiet life, teaching under-privileged children the joys of science. When he crosses paths with Gemma Robinson one day, it is both fate and love at first sight. Their whirlwind romance soon sees them married and enjoying a lovely life together. However, Gemma’s appearance is soon followed by the return of her family from France, including two parents and a young adult sister, all of whom remain very tight-lipped about what has been going on. What begins as a helpful gesture to aid the in-laws soon goes sour, as Elliot learns that there is no plan to leave his home. Even more troubling is that Gemma appears to have some skeletons in her closet that Elliot is only now becoming aware. When odd things begin to occur around the house, Elliot can only wonder if his three houseguests might have some role in it all. More worrisome is that they seem to have taken up permanent residence and are dodging any hopes of leaving the home. Elliot will have to pull some strings to get the assistance he needs, while also trying to determine if this chance encounter with Gemma was just that, or part of a larger plan to con him. Edwards paints quite the picture in this thrilling piece that reads quickly and is full of twists. Recommended to those who enjoy the writing of Mark Edwards, as well as the reader who finds pleasure in something with a slight psychological nature to it.

There is something about Mark Edwards and his writing that I find intriguing, no matter the topic. He is able to push a story along with a slight psychological twist and keep the reader wondering through until the very end. In this piece, it is Elliot Foster who plays the central role, though he is by no means the one generating much of the drama. Elliot has come to accept that life will be quiet for him, living along and with only his small group of friends. However, when Gemma arrives, it is as though a switch is turned on inside of him and he feels like a new man. This newness is tested throughout the novel with challenges that he could not have thought would ever be a part of his life. He struggles to come to terms with it all, but soon discovers that he must fight for all he holds dear, or face sure ruin of both his own life and that of his new wife. Other characters play interesting roles in the larger story, including a trio of in-laws who seem as conniving as they are secretive. The standoff has begun and only one side can emerge victorious, as Elliot tries to wrestle control of his life back from these people whose backstory is anything but clear. The story worked well and while it was not one of Edwards’ better psychological thrillers, it certainly kept my attention. With twists and some great reveals throughout, I could not help but find myself interested to see how things would progress. A mix of shorter and more detailed chapters kept the story flowing and allowed the reader to wonder what awaited them. Strong characters and some interesting banter left me wondering if Edwards has some stories of his own about unwanted visitors. The horror of ‘in-law overload’ is real for anyone who has encountered less than amicable family by marriage before, but Edwards adds something to the experience to make it a little more intense.

Kudos, Mr. Edwards, for another wonderful novel. While not as chilling as some of your work, I enjoyed it for its quick delivery. I cannot wait to see what else you have in store for your fans.

It didn’t take long for the warning bells to start going off for me as I listened to this. For those of us who remember the robot from Lost in Space calling out “Danger! Danger!”, well, that’s all I could think as well. And that’s well before the in-laws show up at Elliot’s house. And once they do, it’s like watching a slow motion car wreck. I was glued to my earphones wondering what would happen next. I kept wanting to warn Elliot, to scream for him to take action.

I loved the joke of the house’s address on Cuckoo Lane, since cuckoos are known for stealing the nests of other birds.

Edwards totally nails a delicious creep factor to this book. There’s an underlying tension throughout which just ratchets up as the book progresses. This book is wildly entertaining in a horror film kind of way. It reminded me of the film Pacific Heights. And yes, it becomes more unbelievable as it progresses. I guessed the ending early on, but that didn’t dampen the entertainment factor.

The narrator, James Langton, did a fabulous job. In fact, his performance was so good it made me wonder if I would have enjoyed the book as much if I had read it, instead of listening to it.

This is my first book by Mark Edwards, but it won’t be my last. I also intend to suss out what other books Langton has narrated. A winning combination.

A old Victorian house lovingly restored by Elliott is now home to him and his new bride, Gemma.  Life is beautiful.  Ah, time for Elliott to meet the in-laws.  They had been living in France and are currently without a place to call home.  Mom, Pop, and Sis are invited to stay for the nonce while they find a place of their own.  This segues all too quickly into a nightmare.  The family visitors turn into something more akin to squatters, rude, nasty, and possibly dangerous.  Did I mention the home is located on Cuckoo Lane?  Have a care as to whom you invite into your home.  Better yet, cut your losses and don't extend the invitation at all.

4.0 stars —- “Here to Stay” by Mark Edwards was a Kindle First selection that sounded interesting so I decided to give it a chance. And I have to say, it was well worth my time. The book was a very fast paced thriller that was entertaining from beginning to end. The book tells the story of Elliott, the owner of a beautiful house, who meets, falls in love with and marries Gemma in a whirlwind courtship. Soon after they marry, Gemma announces that her parents and sister are moving back from France and need a place to stay for a few weeks. The fun begins when the in-laws move in and the problems begin to mount between Elliott and his new family members. To say the characters are colorful is an understatement. The more the reader learns about the in-laws the more interesting the book becomes as the drama continues to ratchet up the longer the in-laws overstay their welcome. I loved the unexpected twists and turns the book takes, and I could really empathize with Elliott as he watches his whole life come apart at the hands of his wife’s family. As the book turns down a darker path it was still entertaining (if slightly unbelievable) with an ending that fell flat and wrong considering how the characters had acted throughout the book. However, I still loved the book and wIll definitely try to read some of Mark Edwards’ other books. He has a gift for writing dialogue and pushing the story at a fast pace so that the reader is never bored. Consider me a fan.

The best thing I can say about this is that the spelling and punctuation were good.

I finished it very, very quickly. I read it fast, but not in that "Oh My! This is so good I’ve got to know what happens next!" way—more in the "Oh My! This is so bad I just want it to be over!" way.

If you like incredibly stupid, unrealistic characters dumped down in the middle of stupid, unrealistic situations in a stupid, unrealistic plot with stupid, unrealistic twists that come as no surprise whatsoever, then THIS is the book for you!

Who is guilty, how this going to end, what is going to happen to our main character...

A book that keeps you guessing, makes your heart beat twice as fast, makes you feel tired for lack of sleep as I had to get to the end...

That is when you know the book is good....

Loved this book, chilling and brilliant.. Loved all the characters, good and bad...

I have read several of Mark Edwards books and I have to say they just get better and better. Just reading the blurb gave me goosebumps and I couldn’t wait to plunge into this story!!!

Elliott and Gemma meet when he opens his garden to the public, theirs is a whirlwind romance and after 2 months they marry in Las Vegas.

When Gemma’s parents say they are returning from living in France but have no where to live, Elliott offers them a temporary place to stay. Where’s the harm in being charitable?

Gemma’s parents Jeff and Izzy arrive with their sick daughter Chloe , but after a few weeks they are not making plans to move out and are taking over the house and Elliot’s life with dangerous consequences!!

This book had me hooked from the start with its twists that kept me guessing. The in laws were very clever, they kept on the right side of the law. They were despicable with their messiness, rudeness and both so manipulative, they made my blood boil and I was planning on how I would get rid of them!!!

Loved the twist at the end. A must read book but be warned once you have read one Mark Edwards book you will be hooked!!!

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

We're the Robinsons--we're survivors.

Holy shitzies, fellow readers! WHAT A ROLLER COASTER RIDE!

I'm a long-time fan of Mark Edwards, but he truly outdid himself with this gem of a story. I started reading it about 6 hours ago, and I'm already finished. I couldn't put my Kindle down!

The characters? All beautifully fleshed out, especially Elliot...as a reader, I could feel his pain, frustration, anger, and despair. In his shoes, I'd feel the exact same way. I found myself cheering him on throughout the novel. The Robinson family...all so intensely vile--some of the best antagonists I've read this year. This book gave me ANXIETY, y'all. But in the best possible way.

This isn't really a twisty novel...the whodunit is pretty obvious from the get-go, despite a few strategically placed red herrings. Right up to it's final moment, however, it's deliciously satisfying. I highly recommend this to virtually everyone...especially if you're looking for a high-octane, quick, and rewarding summer read.

4.5 explosive stars, rounded down!

This one will give it 3.5 review.firstly enjoyed the start of this read it's more of the books I enjoy from mark Edward's the twists but alot of it was far fetched why the in laws was in the house he owned but didnt change the locks while they were out as got new bed.the murders of his neighbours how can there be no trace of evidence DNA etc.for me a story needs to be more realistic but do like the parts of the storyline.like these books more than the ghostly ones.

Elliot is single, good career, lovely home in Dulwich, fairly well off and happy ( he also still likes Eau Savage which I used to love in my youth!)
But he is lonely
Enter Gemma, she appears at an ‘open garden’ event
Its instant ( fatal ) attraction
They Marry in Vegas
Its all perfect, just perfect

Then Gemma’s parents and Sister arrive for a visit, they want to ‘put down roots’, locally and so of course Elliot obliges, welcoming them

And its literally the worst thing he has ever done in his life!!

I read a lot, ( understatement ) and I can honestly say I have never detested 2 characters as much as I did Lizzie and Jeff ( the in laws ), really they are vile, obnoxious and uncouth, and thats on a good day
The portrayal of this couple is just so good I literally wanted to go round to Elliot’s house and help him get them out
It was powerfully emotive reading and I loved it
The only thing I found annoying was me sometimes hurtling forward in a paragraph such was my keenness to see what was happening
The story progresses and more and more comes to light regarding this evil couple and the family that they really are.....I will say no more on plot as to not spoil it!, but the things they did and put Elliot through were devastatingly cunningly wonderfully terrible!!!
The writing was spot on and the tense atmosphere the book gave off was real, well it was to me
Great ending that finished a ( imo ) book that will deffo go in my top reads this year

This was a fast paced thriller with outlandish characters. Elliot is single and lives in a beautiful home that he renovated. He loves his cat and his job. He meets Gemma and they fall head over heels in love and marry within a few months of meeting each other. Soon their lives get interrupted by Gemma's family. They say they need a place to stay for just a few weeks and that's where the nightmare begins. This story had me on the edge of my seat and ended with an OTT twist.

Elliot has a comfortable life with a rewarding career and a beautiful home he remodeled. The only thing missing is a family. When he meets Gemma, she seems perfect for him, and they have a brief courtship before marrying. Soon after getting married, Gemma's family (mother, father, and sister) need somewhere to stay. Elliot is happy to welcome them into his home for a couple of weeks, but the time keeps passing and his in-laws aren't leaving. In fact, they're taking over his home and starting to destroy other areas of his life too.

Elliot is a decent man who works hard and enjoys his quiet life. He wants love though, and is happy when he meets Gemma. Then his in-laws move in. When his in-laws refuse to leave, Elliot is pushed beyond the breaking point. It's a difficult time for him and Gemma. In some ways it brings them closer and in other ways pushes them apart.

While I enjoyed the story, I did feel it was a little too slowly drawn out. The in-laws are smart though, and stay within the law as they disrupt Elliot's life. Elliot tries to remain calm, but there is only so much that a man can handle.

An intriguing story involving the in-laws from Hell. Good for readers who enjoy family drama in domestic thrillers. Crazy, suspenseful, and entertaining.

This was my Amazon First Reads pick for August 2019.

This far-fetched "in-laws from hell" thriller kept my eyes rolling, from start to finish.

When Gemma Robinson conveniently and coincidentally appears in Elliot’s life, they quickly marry and settle into his beautiful home.

Their marital bliss ceases when Eilliot permits Gemma's parents and sister to live with them.

Besides many implausible and off-the-wall aspects of the storyline, my major problem with this book was the book's length.

The 10-hour audiobook should have been a 7-hour audiobook.

The book had a strong beginning and an ending with gasp-worthy twists.

It was the middle of the book that needed editing.

Narrator James Langton did a superb job with the narration.

It was this talented narrator who kept me completely engaged with the book's "this would never, ever happen" storyline.

3.5 stars rounded down to 3

Elliot Foster has it all; a job he loves, a comfortable lifestyle and the love of his life, Charlie his cat. Then a chance meeting with Gemma, sweeps him off his feet. He's head over heels in love and they marry after a few short months. When Gemma asks Elliot if her parents and sister, Chloe can come to stay for a couple of weeks as they are moving back to England from France, Elliot is happy to let them stay. But it's not long before Gemma's parents feet are firmly under the table and that's where they I tend to stay. Elliot believes they ran away from something in France and vows to find out what.

When Elliot married Gemma, he did not realise he was getting her parents and her sister as well. What else he didn't realise was that they were the family from hell. There's quite a lot goes on in this book but by the end all the loose ends are tied up. There are times when I did question what I had just read. Some parts did not seem to ring true. I did enjoy the story. There were plenty of red herrings and i never saw the final twist coming.

I would like to thank Netgalley, Amazon Publishing UK and the author Mark Edwards for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Audio – 5 Stars!
Story – 4.5 Hospitality Be Damned Stars!

This book made me ragey to the point that I was cracking up with laughter.

The main character invites his wife’s family into their home, and they won’t leave!! They were disgusting, cunning, and downright dangerous. What had me cracking up was how the main character would fantasize about getting rid of them. They were pretty dark thoughts, and I couldn’t blame him. It’s fair to say his in-laws were from hell and were thrown out by the devil because even he couldn’t deal with them! LOL

The ending was messed up.

Dear Author, please tell me there is a book 2 in the works, and I promise to round up my rating.

‘Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days’ – Benjamin Franklin.

Elliot Foster and Gemma Robinson meet, fall in love, and marry, all within the space of two months.

Days after their wedding, Gemma announces that her parents, and sister Chloe, are returning to the UK from France, and asks whether they can stay for two weeks while they arrange somewhere to live. Elliot readily agrees, eager to get to know his wife's family.

But right from the onset, Elliot’s In-Laws – Jeff and Lizzy Robinson – are rude, obnoxious, loud, and untidy. Elliot begins to regret his decision to invite them to stay.

Pretty soon they are invading every aspect of Elliot's life.

He asks them to leave, but they refuse.

And then the situation gets a whole lot worse.

Claustrophobic, voyeuristic, unsettling, and chilling – the notion of houseguests from Hell who at first are a nuisance but quickly morph into unstable and dangerous sent my stress levels through the roof. Elliot is gullible and should have known better, and the phrase, ‘marry in haste, repent at leisure' has never been more applicable here, but he’s kind-hearted, loyal, and generous, and you can't help but feel sympathetic towards his plight. I found it ironic that some of the tactics Elliot employed in an attempt to get rid of his in-laws would have worked twenty years ago but backfired spectacularly in this digital age.

There are twists and turns aplenty, jump scares, and chapter cliffhangers culminating in a stunning, jaw-dropping conclusion, that I did predict, but made it no less impacting. The main narrator is Elliot in the present with occasional flashbacks to ‘France' in Jeff's POV.

This one wasn't as memorable for me as The Retreat and Follow You Home, as I prefer Mark Edwards’ gothic-style mysteries with supernatural undertones, but Here to Stay was still enormously entertaining, and Edwards remains an auto-buy author for me.

I find it hard to believe that someone could be as naive as Elliot. The red flags were off the chart. I spent most of the book worried about the cat. Elliot didn't seem to be that concerned about his cat.

Spoiler is about the cat because I wish I had known what happened.

What a disturbing page-turner this book is, perfect as my 60th out of my 60-book reading challenge for 2022.

In-laws from HELL - that's all I'm going to say about the book because one should read this without a further glance at the description.

Mark Edwards has a way with words, creating diabolical characters, intense conflicts, and sinister twists that keep me on the edge of my seat. I am a fan of thrillers set in England, and this story is set in both England and France so that's the cherry on the cake for me.

Great psychological thriller for the spooky month and I finished it in 1 day. Free to read via Prime Reading.

Ši knyga man buvo tikras nervų išbandymas, nes galėjau iki panagių suprast Eliotą. Kai savuose namuose tave priverčia jaustis nei pageidajamu, nei apskritai ko nors vertu. Ir ta nuolat auganti įtampa – visas knygos variklis. Taip, Eliotas kapstosi uošvių praeityje, vyksta daug veiksmo šalia, žinoma, kad yra kažkas, ką atkapsčius įvyks didelis sprogimas, bet ta besikaupanti įtampa, kurią pats savo kūnu net jauti, ir kantrybės taurės perpildymas žada didžiausią BOOM. Labai labai kitoks ir labai paveikus trileris, kurį skaitant tikrai šiurps oda. Stipriai rekomenduoju, norintiems literatūriškai pasinervuot, kartu su veikėjais laukiant teisingo atpildo parazitams.

The new standalone novel by Mark Edwards who writes excellent psychological thrillers.
When Elliot Foster and Gemma Robinson meet one summer afternoon, she saves his life from a life threatening bee sting. It is love at first sight and marry two months later in Las Vegas. In the weeks following their marriage Elliot could not be happier but all that changes when shortly after the wedding Gemma announces that her family are moving back to the UK. Elliot in an effort to please Gemma suggests that her family move in with them until they have a place of their own. He soon realises this is possibly the biggest mistake of his life.
The Robinson's arrive with Gemma’s sister, Chloe, a mysterious young woman who refuses to speak or leave her room. Elliot starts to suspect that the Robinson's are hiding a dark secret. Gemma's family settle into Elliot and Gemma's home and they appear to have no intention of finding a home of their own. Elliot decides to delve into the families past but is he ready for what he uncovers.
A gripping read that I found really entertaining, another excellent novel by Mark Edwards.
I would like to thank both Net Galley and Thomas Mercer for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

“You know I don’t have much experience of big families, but from what I’ve seen there are two types. The type where everything is out in the open, where they argue and shout and slam doors, and where disagreements are dealt with loudly and quickly. And the other type, where no one really says what they mean, where everyone tiptoes around and emotions are kept buried.”
― Mark Edwards, Here To Stay

I will try to explain why I did not like this novel, especially because I love his writing and I adored "The Magpies".

Basically, for me, this is the same story as Magpies only with In laws rather than neighbors. As a result..I kind of knew everything that was gonna happen before it happened. I liked Elliot and I thought I would like this book, despite how closely it resembled Magpies.

I felt "Here to stay" had all the creepiness of Magpies but none of the real riveting aspects. In Here to stay, EVERYONE are so insane and twisted. And here's the thing: there had to be ways of getting the in laws out without resorting to Elliot's final plan. Here are a few.

In the age of Social media, Elliot could have put his story up and made it go viral..or hired someone to do it for him. Heck, these two were running, I bet they would not have wanted the notoriety that comes with that.

Hired a detective to get the goods on them.

Gone to the newspapers.

Implored people on social media for help..maybe even given a reward to the person who could LEGALLY get them out of his house.

If all fails..just leave.

So I did not buy the final solution nor did I buy how incompetent the police were made out to be. There is so much killing in this book and it seems the police cannot even solve ONE of the murders.

Also..the constant tension about Charlie and whether he'd survive did not help. I felt like I had to get to the end to see if Charlie remained unharmed. I see from other reviews many felt the same. Which goes to show..Charlie is the sanest character in this book. Meow.

Final twist? did not see coming and almost rated a three because of how clever it is. I am not dissing the author. He is such a good writer. I AM dissing the nutters in this story because I just could not stand them. And I'd have liked a more complete ending or barring that, a sequel. Elliot had been so battered I do not k now how he still had his sanity at the end.

But I wlil say this..his books are page turners and I am not ever tempted to DNF. I just wish I had liked it a wee bit more. I still will look for other books by this author.

Here to Stay by Mark Edwards is a psychological thriller.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Thomas & Mercer, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)

Elliott has been a bachelor for a long time.  When he meets Gemma, he falls hard.  Soon they are married, and all is good.  That is, until her parents and sister return from France, and move in to Elliott's home with no clear signs of ever leaving.

The antics of Gemma's family quickly prove to Elliott that he may have made a mistake.  That mistake may have been the quick marriage to the love of his life.  He went into this marriage without any knowledge of her past, and that is coming back to haunt him in a big way.

My Opinions:

I have read a number of books by this author, and they are always a 4 or 5 star book.  This one...I cringed through.  Around the 30% mark, it improved....but not enough.  For a while I seriously considered giving it 1 or 2 stars.

I think it was the plot that disappointed me.  This book was just another "innocent man terrorized by someone", this time the in-laws.  His weakness allows him to be at the mercy of her family.  It was just very frustrating.  Elliott is a scientist, therefore he should be fairly bright....that intelligence did not appear.  The plot seemed preposterous, and the ending was inevitable, and fore-shadowed a little too much, so there was no real surprise.  I didn't like any of the main characters, feared for the life of the cat, and wouldn't have minded if the whole family (Elliott included) ended up jailed or dead.

I think it would be a fast read, but I kept putting it down and going to something else that would not aggravate me....so it took me days of agony....should have just ripped off the bandaid and got it over with.

However.....I absolutely loved the last 10%, when Elliott finally stood up for himself.   The writing of course, was great, typical Edwards style.  I can't complain about that.  I also realized, after I was done, that although I hated the majority of the book, it produced real emotions in me....yes, it was anger and frustration, but it was emotion....so it can't have been a really bad book.

Anyway, I am sure there are others that will love it...this one just didn't do it for me.
