Heading Over the Hill

Rate this book
Billy and Dawnie may be in their seventies, but that won’t stop them taking chances or starting again. Their grown-up children have families and lives of their own, so now it’s Billy and Dawnie’s turn, and a life near the sea in Devon beckons.

But the residents of Margot Street (or Maggot Street as Dawnie insists on calling it), don’t quite know what to make of their new neighbours. Billy’s loud, shiny and huge Harley Davidson looks out of place next to the safe and sensible Honda Jazz next door, and Dawnie’s never-ending range of outrageous wigs and colourful clothes, means she’s impossible to miss.

As new friendships are formed and new adventures are shared, Billy and Dawnie start winning their neighbours’ affection. And when life teaches them all a terrible lesson, the folks of Margot Street are determined to live every day as if it’s their last.

Favorite Quotes:

He knew what his problem was: it came to him each night before he fell asleep and it whispered loudly in his ear. He was lonely, and the loneliness slithered over his life like a cold snake and stole his confidence and made him shiver inside his own skin.

Sylv chuckled. ‘Well he’s a budgie… but he mocks people and he’s a bird, so…’ ‘So?’ Dawnie screwed up her face, thinking. ‘So he’s called Tequila Mockingbird?’

‘I want to be like Bruce and say “Yippee ki-yay” to his arse.’ Vinnie frowned and followed his mother out into the street. For someone of her advanced years, she was walking quite quickly, her elbows jutting out from her body as if she was looking for a fight… Dilly screwed up her eyes so that her face became tough and imperious. ‘Are you feeling lucky, punk? … go ahead and make my day… Any more of this gossip about Billy and you’ll have me to deal with, Malcolm Frost. And you know what will happen if I hear about you bad-mouthing my friend?’ She waggled the finger under his nose, made a firing sound and blew down the nail. ‘I’ll be back.’

It has taken me years to get it to this state of imperfection.

My Review:

I reveled in every well-chosen word of this lively tale. The storylines were astoundingly witty, thoughtfully insightful, tenderly poignant, and laced together with exceedingly clever and vibrant arrangements of words that whisked me into a colorful vortex where I was practically bouncing in my chair with glee while giggle-snorting and smirking throughout perusal.

Each inimitable character was well-honed, multi-layered, oddly peculiar, vastly intriguing, and uniquely dynamic. The primary characters of Dawnie and Billy were seventy-years young and more high-spirited and energetic than most people in their thirties. I adored them. I was also quite taken with the eighty-six-year-old Dilly who enjoyed watching and quoting Bruce Willis films and claimed she was “on the pull” during their 60s disco adventure. Dilly’s story threads often found me cackling.

While brimming with clever levity and remarkably comical, there were also topical and heart-squeezing elements relevant to our world today including PTSD, grief, anxieties, ageism, bigotry, depression, and social bias. Judy Leigh’s delightful storytelling was smooth, flawlessly engaging, and rapturously transportive. Ms. Leigh cunningly plumbed all the feels while keeping me mirthfully entertained and tethered to my kindle and now finds herself with the burden of a rabid new fangirl for life - unless she starts writing about zombies, I despise zombies.

Just published my October Book Vlog and whew! It was a lot of reading but so worth it!
The Written Review
description
Dawnie and Billy are (quite frankly) ready to retire. They raised their children and have decided (at 70) that they'd like to start over new.

Which is what brings them to Barnstaple, by the sea (temporarily). They plan to rent a home until they find the perfect seaside cottage.

But as soon as they move in...there's trouble.

Not all the neighbors like the look of a 200+ pound grizzled Harley biker and his "loudmouth" wigged wife.

Malcom and Gillian (next door neighbors) immediately know that those two are not to be trusted.

Despite the grumpy neighbor's warnings and misgivings, the other neighbors on the block slowly get to know the couple and realize that their first impressions were likely misconceptions.

Lonely Vinnie and his elderly mother find friendship in a time where they both felt isolated.

The "feminists" (Audrey and Sylv...to elderly ladies who happen to live together...for...companionship as Malcolm steadily believes) find themselves feeling younger than ever when they go on day trips.

Ursula and her husband find themselves swept up in the excitement.

There's only Malcolm and Gillian - and when Malcolm sees Gillian stepping outside of their carefully mapped lives....he's going to do something about it.

I absolutely ADORED this one.

It was SO well written and SUCH a refreshing read.

I absolutely LOVED how much the characters were in love - I feel like so many books focus on finding or losing love.

It is so nice to read one where the characters are simply IN love - consistently throughout (and that the book's plot/tension never jeopardizes that).

I loved the cast of side characters - the sweet elderly mother, her lost son, the "feminist" female neighbors.

They were all so memorable and entertaining.

I do think one of the character's transformation at the end happened a little fast to be fully believable but other than that, the book was sooo good.

With thanks to Boldwood Books, Judy Leigh and Netgalley for sending me a free copy in exchange for an honest review

5☆ Uplifting, Funny, Feel-good, Very Entertaining.... A Must Read for 2020!

What an fantastic feel-good, Uplifting, laugh out loud and thoroughly entertaining story.
I adored Dawnie and Billy, I would love to party with them!

Dawnie and Billy are the perfect advocates to show you you're never too old to live life to the fullest, wear and be who you want to be, never stop being who you are to fit in and most importantly have fun doing it!

When Dawnie and Billy rock up in a big red van, the residents on the terrace are horrified. Especially Malcolm next door! The nosey neighbour who curtain twitches but hides behind them instead of venturing out and taking a chance on meeting new people.
He is determined to keep a daily log of all their activities.... starting with Bigamy lol (all will be explained when you read it!)

But Dawnie and Billy are aging hippies/ bikers ( oh and I do love a Harley 🥰 ) who have a larger than life personality and hearts of gold!
I mean they only plan to stay for 6 months. How much trouble could they get into!

Oh my gosh this is definitely going on my Top Books for 2020!
I'm a huge fan of stories that feature characters of the golden years, and Dawnie and Billy are my heros, they melted my heart! There zest for life just sparkles out of them.
All the beautiful and unlikely friendships they made was wonderful.
There was so many laughs and Tender moments throughout this book it was an absolute joy to read.
The Characters were an eclectic bunch and I loved each one, lol even Malcolm!

I adore Judy Leigh's Books she's an incredibly talented Author, so if you haven't yet had the chance to read her books then I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Heading Over The Hill!

What a wonderful, charming and fun story!

It gets off to a good start and as the story unfolds, it just gets better and better.

Main characters are Billy and Dawnie. They are seniors living their life with love and lust. They are the type of people who embrace you, befriend you, going along their merry way, making their lives and the lives of all around them fun and exciting. Get ready to laugh out loud at some of the descriptions and actions of Billy and Dawnie and their friends and neighbors. You know how some people just have that innate ability to bring people together? People who shine from the inside out? People who are warm and welcoming? That’s Billy and Dawnie!

5 “life is too short” stars for this read!

This book seemed to be written about adult themes (middle age, maintaining the marriage relationship, empty nest), but on a YA level (or lower?). For all of the book’s potential, the characters felt shallow and the women namby pamby.

Well they say never judge a book by its cover - and in this case I don't mean the cover for this book which is rather lovely and very fitting, but rather that this is the overall message and theme I was feeling throughout this book.

Don't judge on appearances, and there may be more to a person than meets the eye - which you may think sounds rather obvious but when Billy and Dawnie move onto Maggot Street, it shakes things up completely.

They are in their seventies, he is a biker, she loves bright colourful wigs and is the life and soul of any room. At first I struggled to get to grips with them, not because of that, but due to Dawnie mentioning the names of all of her family rather quickly as you enter the book, and I just was a tad lost as to who any of these people were, but I did get to grips with it quite fast after that.

We are also treated to the inner goings on at two of the neighbours. Malcolm and Gillian, where Malcolm is keeping a notebook of the reasons he reckons Billy and Dawnie will never fit into Maggot Street, mostly based on assumptions and its scary in some respects to know there are almost certainly people like Malcolm out there in the world making the same snap judgments but since it was fiction it was rather amusing too.

And Gillian who initially seems to be there purely to do whatever Malcolm wants, but it becomes apparent there is a lot more to her than meets the eye.

The other house we see inside is that of Vinnie and Dilly (his mother). Vinnie is a lovely young man (well in a novel where most of the characters are 70+, 50 is young!), seems to be unlucky in love and is currently back living at home with his mother, but wants more from life.

Dawnie and Billy's arrival on the street shakes things up for all the nearest neighbours in ways you wouldn't believe at the start. It is a huge cast of characters and I wouldn't have it any other way, as they are all so believable, that they started to feel like my own community.

But I have failed to mention the best character - Tequila. He only gets short mentions now and then but if he doesn't make you giggle I'd be shocked!!

It's yet another fabulous book from the talented Judy Leigh and is one that I really enjoyed reading.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Billy and Dawnie have their children and grandchildren in their own house whilst they house hunt and take out a six month rent in Margot Street (or Maggot Street as Dawnie calls it). There new neighbours are rather a mixed bag to say the least. Most are lovely and neighbourly, then there are the Frosts- by name and nature who stir up trouble and complain about the slightest thing. When Billy arrives with his ponytail, leather jacket and motorbike he is instantly called a hells angel and possible criminal, whilst Dawnie with her love of wigs appears to the Frosts as if Billy has several wives. Of how friendships can change things for he better and sometimes how the little things mean the most and can have the greatest effect on us. This is described as soul-warming, rib-tickling, timeless tale of true love, true friendship and happy-ever-afters - a perfect description. Of love and life and making the most of those we love and cherishing each and every moment. A book to make you smile, go aww, and what (?) all on one page! One to leave you with a smile.

I really enjoy Judy Leigh’s books. I find them refreshing, entertaining and they show that older people can still stay active, fall in love and enjoy life. I find her books give a positive outlook to aging and we are all going down that road.
In “Heading Over the Hill”, Billy and Dawnie are in their seventies. Their adult children are somewhat settled and have lives of their own so they decide to find a place, just for themselves, near the ocean.
Unfortunately, as nice as Billy Murphy and Dawnie Smith are, I was unable to connect with them. Nor with any of the other characters. I especially found Dawnie to be too eccentric for my tastes.
All and all, however, it was still a pleasant read.

This is the first book I've read by this author and will read more as I really enjoyed it. Sadly I had a long break as couldn't read anything but still picked it up where I left off and was a delightful read and shows how you live life to the full and making new friends it's a warm read and shows real love.
Billy and dawnie are getting on in life but don't want anything to stop them so decode to move to the sea side but when they turn up the neighbours don't no what to make of them as Billy is loud and has a motorbike which looks out of place and dawnie has a range of different wigs and all different colours and also colourful clothes. But as new friendships are formed new adventures are found as well and they start winning the neighbours over

Once again Ms. Leigh has created another homely story that kept me engaged and entertained. I had categorized this as an 'Up-Lit' read when I read the book blurb. This book had a mix of ups and downs in the lives of the characters. There were moment of tears, and laughter. The story about the creation of a neighborhood clan was just what I needed to read. I loved Billy and Dawnie!

Judy Leigh is a master at creating characters to fall in love with. She moulds them perfectly, so that we want to be involved in their lives and want to find out more about them. This is how I felt about the residents of Maggot, ooops I mean Margot Lane . As soon as I was introduced to each of them I wanted to read on and delve deeper.

Firstly we meet Dawnie and Billy. The newest residents to Margot Lane. A couple who are in their seventies, they are great grandparents. You might think they are moving to the coast to retire and want a quieter life. That is until we realise Billy loves his Harley Davidson and Dawnie loves to ride pillion. Not your average old age retired couple

Next door to them we have Malcolm the Moaner and his wife, Gillian. Now I have a soft spot for grumpy old men. So the instant we met Malcolm, I loved him. He was curtain twitching and thinking up all-sorts about his neighbours, is Billy really a bigamist?!  You will have to read to find out. Malcolm is Constantly looking for the next thing to moan or argue about.

Across the road lives Vinnie and his elderly mother Dilly. There’s something endearing about Vinnie, and you can’t help but feel sorry for him, in a good way. He’s there looking after his mother, and is dreaming of settling down with his dream woman.

And, finally we have Aude and Sylv. The feminists, as Malcolm the moaner calls them. Two very friendly women who are eager to welcome Dawnie and Billy into the neighbourhood.

I’m reaching the grand old age of 40 next year. And, after reading about Dawnie and Billy and their zest for life, they are proof that you are as young as you feel. Live life to the fullest, and enjoy.

Heading Over The Hill is a real feel good book, full of laughs and tender moments. Judy Leigh is an exceptional author and will have you smiling with her words. Plus just look at that cover  amazing.

Whenever I'm given the opportunity to read one of this author's book I jump at the chance. They are laugh out loud run reads and often have older main characters making the most of life and opportunities - and this is no exception.

When Billy and Dawnie move into a rented house in Devon they're leaving their family, including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, behind to make a new life for themselves and looking for a new home near the sea in Devon. They're not the stereotypical septuagenarians - these leather clad rockers arriving in a transit van, complete with their Harley Davison and drum kit as well as the usual paraphernalia. He also has long hair and she has a selection of colourful wigs and clothes, they're not the quiet folk the neighbours at number 11 had anticipated!

There are a lovely, welcoming couple of neighbours on one side of their new home and on the other side are a couple who are reminiscent of the Meldrews from 'One Foot in the Grave' - he's seems determined to assume the worst in everyone and every situation. However, get ready for Billy and Dawnie to work their magic and find true friendships, new opportunities and to share their zest for all life has to offer in this fantastic, funny read.

This is a delightful, fun read about living life to the full, making the most of your time as you never know what's around the corner for you or those you care about. It is about friendship, sharing, kindness and looking beyond the obvious, making the best of your chances and not judging people on their appearance. There are tragedies involved but the story is generally a very positive look at life -there's even a visit to a dry ski slope for a group of friends including one lady in her eighties and more than one romance.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

A free read for prime reading from Amazon awhile back.

I read this on vacation and it was certainly a light, humorous read. However I was going against the grain because I didn't really care for Dawnie, the main character. If I were going to rent a place for only six months, I sure wouldn't be painting it, much less painting a shade of orange when the landlord said neutral. Some of the houses they saw sounded wonderful, but her and Billy turned up their noses at. (With the housing market here in Northern Virginia, no one has that luxury--houses are gone in hours.)

I thought Malcolm's character was painted with too wide a black brush, and Gillian was equally to blame especially in his lack of household help. I don't know of any early retirees where there wasn't a talk of dividing chores or absolutely no eating out.

Dawnie and Billy in the future--

Heading Over The Hill is a humorous contemporary story.

Billy and Dawnie may be great-grandparents but they still enjoy life, riding their motorbike and having fun. They have left their family in Bolton and have come to Devon in search of their dream home.

The story opens with them arriving at the house they have rented for a few months in Barnstaple; Dawnie is a little worried that the street will be boring and the neighbours will be unfriendly. However, Billy assures her that everything will be okay.

This is one of those feel-good stories that encourages everyone to live life to the full. Dawnie and Billy are a very generous and likeable couple. I enjoyed how Billy’s story slowly unfolded with a few red-herrings thrown in.

I have heard so many good reviews for Judy Leigh’s book that I wanted to try one, but, for me, this was a just an okay read; I was hoping for more.

Set in England, the novel tells the story of a retired couple who move to a new community far from their children. They rent a house while searching for one to buy. The woman struggles with not having her daughter and son around. The man struggles with his past in the military.

Initially, I had a difficult time caring about the characters but they grew on me over time. Not a lot happens in the story. Near the end of the book one of the secondary characters dies unexpectedly. I felt the death was unnecessary and added little to the story.

I adore Judy Leigh’s books. Her uplifting, enjoyable and captivating novels never fail to entertain and inspire and she is back with a fantastic new novel guaranteed to cheer everybody up in what has been a trying and dismal year for us all: Heading Over the Hill.

Billy and Dawnie might be in their seventies, but that doesn’t mean that they are putting blankets over their knees and sucking on toffees. They are certainly not going to let their advanced years keep them from living life to the full and making the most of every single day. With their grown-up children having settled down and leading busy lives of their own, Billy and Dawnie decide to make their dream of living by the sea a reality. After all, nobody is ever too old for a second chance, so they pack up their bags and head over to the Devon coastline for a brand new life. Are the residents of Margot Street ready for their new neighbours? Or are they going to be in for the shock of their lives?

No sooner have Billy and Dawnie moved in that jaws start drop and tuts start echoing down the length of the entire street. Billy’s loud Harley Davidson sticks out among the sensible people-carriers the residents of Margot Street tend to favour and Dawnie’s outrageous wigs and brightly coloured clothes make her impossible to miss. It doesn’t look like the couple will be making lots of new friends in Margot Street, but will they manage to win their neighbours round? Or have Billy and Dawnie just made the biggest mistakes of their lives?

Before long, Billy and Dawnie realise that they are not that different from their new neighbours after all and when real life comes knocking, the entire community realises that the time has come to pull together, help each other out and enjoy every possible moment of the time they have left.

Judy Leigh’s books are the literary equivalent of joy and happiness. I love the worlds she creates and the eccentric characters that people her sparkling, feel-good and effervescent novels and Heading Over the Hill is certainly no exception. A brilliantly told tale about friendship, love and the ties that bind, Heading Over the Hill will not only keep readers engrossed from start to finish, but show them that life is for living – regardless of how many birthday candles one has on their cake!

Heading Over the Hill is a delicious and delightful page-turner from a writer whose books should be prescribed on the NHS: Judy Leigh!

Imagine Schitt’s Creek with Johnny and Moira Rose in their 70’s.
Ok, so there’s no financial mess, and they don’t live in a motel, but imagine these outrageous 2 characters retired and moving into your neighborhood.
I know what you’re thinking…. so just pick this one up and read it, because its as wild and fun as you think.

When 70 year old empty nesters Billie and Dawnie decide they want to start over, they pick up and move to Margot Street in Devon near the sea (or Maggot street as per Dawnie’s interpretation). But with Billie’s big noisy Harley and Dawnie’s crazy clothing and exorbitant wigs, the current residents are a little shocked and not sure what to expect. That includes next door neighbors Malcolm and Gillian who are especially mistrustful and suspicious. As the neighborhood gets to know Billie and Dawnie, friendships are made and adventures are had, opening the neighborhood up to a whole new outlook. That is except for Malcolm, and he isn’t standing for any of it. When something terrible occurs that teaches them all a valuable lesson, the neighbors all realize every day is a blessing and it’s time to live and love life to the fullest.

What an absolute fun ride (pun intended). As the cast of characters unfold and we get to know everyone, we see how the arrival of the new and odd neighbors brings everyone out of their comfort zone and opens up a whole new world to Margot Street. Chalked full of underlying “life lessons” that are too many to list, these two crazy and endearing newbies are welcome to be my neighbors anytime. And Drama? Yeah crazy Malcolm brings the drama and attempts to stir the pot (what’s a book without a cranky neighbor?). I absolutely adored this book. All the characters have their own story and the arrival of B&D opens windows and doors for all of them in this stagnant neighborhood.  I think I’ve mentioned before how much I love reading stories with elderly main characters, and this one fits the bill perfectly. I highly recommend this one, its fun and quirky and uplifting. Just don’t go trying to visit them and bring covid into this sweet neighborhood, because I will be livid if anything happens to this cozy community and I will hunt you down like Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Thank you so much to Judy Leigh, Boldwood Books, Netgalley and Rachel Gilbey from Rachels Random Resources for my gifted copy of this book for my honest and unbiased opinion.

Think you knew everything about getting older? Think again!

Dawnie and Bille are bikers and hippies and they just want to live life to the fullest.

They are new in the area and the neighbours are curious about them. Curtains are twitching and there is gossip.

They are loveable, original and quirky and I raced through this novel. It was funny, realistic and made me think about how there's always a good time to enjoy life and it is never too late to.

A really great pick-me-up for this difficult year.

Thanks to Judy Leigh, Rachel's Random Resources and Boldwood Books for my ARC for an honest and voluntary review.

If you're tired of reading about seniors or retirees sitting around waiting to die or doing nothing but being grandmas and grandpas and not out there living life, then I say you've got to read a book by Judy Leigh! Heading Over the Hill is the first one I chose, but while I listened to this one on audible I read another on Kindle. They are funny, refreshing and carry a life lesson that everyone can learn from!

Billy and Dawnie are both in their 70's and have just moved out of their home that they shared with their daughter and her family. They've decided to rent a home until they can find the prefect permanent home near the beach. It all gets started when they pull up their van at their new rental on Margot Street in a small London town. Their next door neighbor, a nosy man by nature is spying out the window and immediately misjudges them by their looks. Billy has a leather jacket on and his hair is down to the middle of his back. Dawnie has a mini skirt on and her wig for the day is blond and long, but she's got others in all colors of the rainbow. He's pegged them as hoodlums because of their attire and Billy's long hair. And then out comes the Harley and the neighbor is now convinced he's a "hood" and has obviously done time in jail. It all gets pretty hysterical after that! The other neighbors all grow to love Billy and Dawnie and enjoy spending time with the couple. They go on outings and dinners together, they all grow close to their new neighbors and enjoy their company, but Billy and Dawnie are still determined to find that elusive new home near the beach to call their own. Although as time goes on they too are getting close to the other neighbors and seem to be taking their time in their house hunt. Are they starting to feel at home in their tiny rental on Margot Street?

These are the funniest books that give us a real look at seniors and retirees without making us look like ancient beings sitting around waiting to die, or being burdensome on our kids. I live in a 60 year old body, but have a 30 something year old brain, okay sometimes it's 20 something. I get tired of reading about old women sitting around rocking in their chairs knitting or stuck watching kids all day waiting for others to visit. These characters are active and fun, they do outrageous things that people of my generation still love to do, and since we wrote the book on some of the fun, we do it well! But with that said, there's also a good life lesson contained within each book. In this one it's all about letting go of the past to be able to love what's ahead. We've all got our painful memories that can haunt us, if we let them, but we've also got those magnificent times that we must cling to to carry us through. If you want to laugh out loud at the antics of those in their "golden years" or read a great story of friendship and love please check out Judy Leigh. She's got several great books on active seniors and their lives. You won't find them in retirement homes, that's for sure! Happy Reading!

This is only the second book I've read by this author, and already I'm loving her writing style and the characters, all of which are tending to be towards the mature end of the age spectrum.

However nothing about these characters suggests a bunch of people discussing their aches and pains, waiting for pension day to roll round, or for the inevitable to come.

Instead our main characters, Dawnie and Billy, are taking chances and starting again, their children are grown up and have lives of their own, so a life by the sea beckons.

But Dawnie and Billy aren't your average seventy-something's, Billy is huge in stature, loud, and rides round on a Harley Davidson, and Dawnie, has a never ending collection of outrageous wigs, and colourful clothing.

Whilst looking for their perfect place to live, they rent a house in a little street in Barnstaple, Devonshire, and it's safe to say that their new neighbours don't quite know what to make of them.

Eventually new friendships are formed, along with many new shared adventures, leading the residents, of Margot Street to live every day, as if it's their last.

Maybe growing old disgracefully, isn't such a bad idea at all.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS. Such an easy, fun and page turner of a read that I devoured. It was over far too quickly for my liking. I loved it all. The characters, the town, the romances, the friendships and the neighbours. Absolutely brilliant. Parts had me laughing out loud!
It's such a uplifting, happy and full of love and friendship story I couldn't help but smile all the way through. The main characters are Billy and Dawnie growing old but 'disgracefully' I beg to differ. They're having fun, living life to the full and different. I loved them both. I aspire to be like them when they're older. Ha.
A brilliant read. A well deserved five stars from me. Might even be heading into my top twenty reads of the year. One I won't forget in a long time. I love old characters but especially those that are 'different' from the OAP norm.

Heading Over The Hill by Judy Leigh is the most charming contemporary novel about growing old and having fun.
The main characters are all fifty plus with some octogenarians. Growing old does not have to mean slowing down. There is still fun out there to be had… especially if you own a Harley Davidson. New neighbours certainly shake up a sleepy street with their kindness, friendship and zest for life. They will blow all your pre-conceived ideas about older people with pipe and slippers out of the window. There are misunderstandings along the way even as the hand of friendship is extended.
This book is such a fun read. It will make you roar with laughter and also cry silently. There are some extremely funny scenes – I will never forget an octogenarian on a dry ski slope. I literally laughed out loud. A rather raucous budgie creates amusing scenes too.
There are some huge hearts and huge personalities within the book. They inject light and life into a dark world. It is a perfect book to read when the world seems rather bleak as it does at the moment.
Heading Over The Hill is totally charming. It is a wonderful light-hearted read that will leave you smiling and feeling good.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

This story about a couple in their seventies who have turned their house over to their children and moved south to find a sea side cottage in Devon, was a slow burner for me. At first I found it rather odd with strange characters (both the couple and their new neighbors), but gradually their unconventionality created more community in their new neighborhood, and even the ones predisposed to dislike a motor cycle rider with a wife who likes to wear bright colored wigs and clothing come to like them. Ultimately it was a feel good tale with a positive look at aging. 3.5 stars.

A heartfelt read that was surprisingly good. While I couldn't find familiarity with a lot of the plot arcs, such as the struggles of trying to find the perfect property to retire to or the struggles of war trauma, this was an unexpectedly sweet read populated by a charming bunch of quirky geriatrics.

This book is a little slice of life in Barnstaple, by the sea, north of Devon, where the reader meets and gets to know some wonderful neighbors that become friends during the course of the story.
I was engrossed in this wonderful book immediately and I am somewhat heartbroken that it is now over and I do not get to continue to read about these characters. I am hoping that they go on to have happy lives. (Yes, I do care about these fictional people!)

I love the author’s style (and I have read all her books published so far). She has a gift of creating characters that become so much more than people on the pages of a book. These characters become real people to me and I honestly adore them. From the unique couple of Dawnie and Billy, to the grumpy Malcolm, and the young at heart (although not young in age) Dilly, they all have a loving place in my memory now. Her description of the scenery transported me to North Devon and the beautiful landscape there. The plot was woven into a glorious tale and I am happy I took the journey with this book.

The story has themes of Laughter, Loving Unconditionally, Compassion, Loyalty, Keeping Hope Alive for the Future, Having Fun, and Treasuring Our Here & Now.

I enjoyed reading this book so much! I highly recommend it!

I want to thank NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the pleasure of reading the advanced reader copy. My review is my own opinion not influenced by receiving the ARC.

I absolutely loved this story of love, friendship and living life to the full. It’s a solid 5 stars from me.
I’m going to struggle to review this book which is equal parts hilarious and heart-warming with a light sprinkling of sadness. I avoid spoilers at all costs, but this story is just packed full of some of the best characters that I’ve met in a while.
Margot Street boasts some of the loveliest folks around and even the grouches have good reason for their poor attitude.
The stand-out characters, for me, beside Billy and Dawnie, were Dilly and the foul-mouthed Budgie, Tequila! That said, the competition was strong but they provided me with the best laugh out loud moments.
If, like me, you’re getting ready to head over the hill, this is a gem of a story and one that will bring a smile to your face.

This is the third Judy Leigh novel I have read and the author continues her good form. Once again a novel filled with lovely characters, lots of back stories, emotional moments, laughter and a reminder that all isn’t always as it seems.
A book full of positivity, yet highlighting the weaknesses of human nature, to judge, to reject and to decide before we have full knowledge of the facts !
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can recommend it to anyone looking for a book full of interesting characters, tackling ageist stereotypes head on with a flourish and a feel good finish.
