Shit Adults Never Taught Us

A SNAPSHOT REVIEW OF THE THINGS YOU DIDN’T LEARN IN SCHOOL – IN QUICK, HILARIOUS CHAPTERS.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if life had a manual? Not for your daily how-tos like cooking or ironing) but for when the real shit pops up. The money shit we have no idea how to navigate, like negotiating a raise or buying a car. The relationship shit that slaps us in the face as we turn into full-fledged adults, like surviving a gut-wrenching breakup and having the courage to fall in love. The mind fucks that sneak into our brains after puberty like a ninja and set up camps of anxiety, loneliness, and regret. The life shit that somehow was completely ignored throughout more than a decade of schooling, like protecting your privacy online, traveling on any budget, and finding motivation when it seems impossible.

We’ve made it this far, but after countless conversations with friends, it became obvious to me that our childhood education had a ton of gaps. Sure, we learned linear equations and got to dissect frogs for some reason, but no one taught us what the difference between an HMO and a PPO was and why it’s important. I took several years of Algebra but not once was a Mutual Funds class offered.

That’s where Shit Adults Never Taught Us comes in. This book picks up where the adults left off and helps fill in all our insufficient knowledge by going beyond the Google search bar.

Disguised as a self-help book, this mini-memoir uses personal experiences, including some epic failures, to guide you through the most perplexing moments in life. Shit Adults Never Taught Us covers a lot of topics: including career strategies, mental health, emotional quandaries, and navigating all of the WTF moments of adulthood.

Special thanks to the author for providing me with an electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Expected publication date: April 16, 2021

Natasha Sattler’s “Shit Adults Never Taught Us” is a funny, profanity-filled guide to living the best adult life we can. She provides life hacks and anecdotes that speak to anyone who is trying desperately to “win” at adulating, and failing miserably (which, from my experience, seems to be just about everyone).

“Shit Adults Never Taught Us” is broken down into four sections; money/investing, love/relationships, mind/mental health/self-care and life hacks. You know, the Big Stuff. The good thing about Sattler’s novel, as she admits, is that each section can be read separately, and you do not need to read the entire book to gain from it. If you have your “money shit” figured out, skip that section and move on to another one (also, please tell me how you managed that! I’m desperate for answers on that one) . For example, a lot of the money and health insurance information was not relevant to me, not because it wasn’t helpful, but Canada does not have 401ks and medical insurance (although we do have similar concepts) so those parts were interesting, but not relevant.

Sattler’s anecdotes were hilarious. I am a fan of profanity, and there were a few times when I literally laughed out loud. Also, when she talked about her ex from high school who cheated on her like it was his career aspiration? Same, girl, same. There was very little in Sattler’s novel that I couldn’t relate to, and when it’s mixed in with smart and quirky lines like “don’t peek through a window and imagine you’re seeing the whole house” and being “more overwhelmed than a chameleon in a Skittles factory”, you know that Sattler isn’t taking herself too seriously, either.

I am very much a bitter cynic. Not sure where it came from, or how it developed, but for this reason I do not generally read self-help books. I immediately brush off the “advice” as rubbish, or generate some reason in my head why it works for that specific person, but won’t work for me. In Sattler’s case, I actually found myself using one of her examples (the “what’s below that”? method) as I drove to work this morning. I was quite surprised to find a theory like this that I had not heard of before, and I must say, I was rather impressed.

“Shit Adults Never Taught Us” is relevant to any of us of a certain age who are looking for ways to live our best life (which, really, isn’t that everyone?). Sattler uses sarcastic, witty humour (my favourite kind) and doesn’t take herself too seriously, which makes her novel readable and surprisingly relatable.

Each part has very valuable content.

In Part 3 author has shared the contents in which we all are weak. The mind shit. She shared how we can turn the negativity into our positivity. we should accept others vision towards us because we cannot change that.
Controlling anxiety, emotions. and many more.

IN PART 4 author has shared how we can make our lives happier with Or without expending much money. And she also talk about simple but important things that we ignore in our life.

$𝘩𝘪𝘵 𝘈𝘥𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘛𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘜𝘴⠀

This is one of those books that every teenager should receive in their "going to college" or "moving out of the house" box. It should live on your coffee table and I promise you'll pick it up and learn something (and so will your guests!) more often than you expect.⠀

Broken up into four parts - career & money; relationships; mind; and life - this book is a bit of an encyclopedia on how to be an adult. ⠀
I love that not only does the book provide stellar life advice from savings accounts and stock portfolios to don't date your coworkers to how to calm your anxiety, but also gives actual action items after each chapter so you're able to put the advice into practice. For those of us who love crossing stuff off the list, Sattler even provides check boxes so you can feel extra accomplished (assuming of course you're willing to write in your book)!
⠀⠀
Another great thing about this novel is that it's really for everyone. Even the people who seemingly have their $hit together can benefit from being reminded that guilt and regret are useless emotions or that they can negotiate better rates for monthly bills. ⠀

This book is delivered in the perfect format with short, digestible chapters, a humorous tone, and enough variety to appeal to anyone and everyone. ⠀

If you're looking for a self-help book that is so much more or a gift for the person who has everything, look no further. ⠀

Thank you to the author for a copy of this excellent and truly helpful read.

This is a comprehensive book that I wish I would have had starting life as a young adult. The chapters are super short and gives you lessons on your financial shit, mind shit and life shit. After the chapters it gives you a quick checklist of things you shouldn’t give a f*ck about doing! Yes it says that.

This would make an amazing gift for graduation and it’s funny enough that even if they aren’t a reader they will surely pick up this book!

This book is fantastic. Sattler writes short bursts of chapters that are straight to the point without any fluff. She’s so clear and explicitly humorous, encouraging her reader to only read the parts they need help in, I love the cut the crap attitude, just do the shit! She targets money, relationships, life, and mind in general and what it means to really handle and manage adult situations that were all thrown into and expected to know about. She defines terminology based on the content and rewrites the meanings in easy to read blurbs. I thoroughly enjoyed the sections on when it’s time to leave a job, self validation, setting boundaries, and living your life like YOU want to.

“There is no next chapter for happiness. You’re not a Greek tragedy. You’re a biography. Don’t wait for page 200 to start enjoying your story.”

You can preorder this book today on Apple Books or Barnes and Noble! It goes on sale April 16th. Pick up this gem, read the parts you want, and laugh, be inspected, motivate yourself to wake up and DO IT! It’s your life!

“𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑟𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑢𝑐𝑘 𝑢𝑝... 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑓𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑦.”

Firstly I have to say, I appreciate the hell out of Natasha for letting me have an ARC copy of her book to read and apologise for being such a slow reader. This book is just pure gold.

Have you ever jokingly said “I wish life came with a manual” because if you have then this is it!! This book is like an Idiots Guide to Adulting, written from countless years of experience and with the wisdom of all the good, the bad and the ugly that comes with life. Add to that a healthy dose of swear words and you’ve got a masterpiece in the making!!

𝑆ℎ𝑖𝑡 𝐴𝑑𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑠 𝑁𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑇𝑎𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑈𝑠 is broken up into four sections Career and Money Shit, Relationship Shit, Mind Shit and Life Shit and runs through a huge variety of topics that you may or may not have ever wondered about.

This book was easy to read, funny and relatable. I loved the checklists at the end of some of the chapters and the smattering of quotes throughout. I did skip some parts in the Money Shit section as they didn’t really apply to an Australian audience but Natasha does mention to skip information that doesn’t apply to you if you want. Honestly though I plan on re-reading this book and making a list of pointers to encourage myself to adult better in the future.

All in all, I highly recommend this book so if you would like a copy it is available for preorder now at Barnes and Noble and Apple Books and will be released as a paperback and e-book on April 16, 2021.

Natasha Sattler, the author of “Shit Adults Never Taught Us” has written a self-help guide in a witty and informative way. In the Introduction, the author states,” This is essentially a memoir disguised as a self-help book.” This book is divided into sections, “Career and Money Shit”, “Relationship Shit”, “Mind Shit” and “Life Shit” Within these sections are short essays or short chapters.

These chapters are witty and sometimes very practical. Many of these topics are ones that usually aren’t discussed or thought of when chatting with others. For example in the “Career and Money Shit” section, the author gives advice on saving, asking for a raise, and explains what a 401K is. So much of what the author has written in the various chapters really is common sense.

In the “Relationship Shit” section there are topics about ending a relationship, looking for love, and surviving a breakup. The author also suggests learning new things, going to clubs, and treating yourself, or taking yourself out, friendship, and many other things.

I appreciate that in “Mind Shit”, the author offers suggestions to ease anxiety, and problem solve which again are so helpful. In “Life Shit” the author gives suggestions on traveling alone, being mindful of your health, and so much more. I would recommend this as a great “to go to book” and a resource book that is extremely thought-provoking.

Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it does buy choices”. -pg. 5
👏👏👏👏
This book should be in every 15 year olds stocking this Christmas. Or if you don’t celebrate Christmas just give it to them for the hell of it. This shit is valuable. To be honest, I grew up with most of it and I’m so grateful because it set me up with my feet grounded.
With chapters like “Career and money shit, Relationship Shit, Mind Shit, and Life Shit, pretty every thing is covered. From saving money, to giving yourself a damn vacation, it’s all wisdom. It’s such an easy read, nothing extremely pedantic so it’s extremely accessible. So grab a notebook, your sticky tabs, highlighters and get going. This is the stuff I wish everyone knew. And really I needed a refresher on Mind shit.

Shit Adults Never Taught Us was educational and surprisingly funny! Well I guess I should’ve guessed from the title that this book would have serious topics written in a non conventional fun way. I loved the short little chapters that touched on important subjects such as planning for retirement, investing, asking for a raise all the way to encouraging you to do things that scare you. I felt like I was learning something but the author made it fun.
I learned so much from this book, most in part 3 of the book titled “Mind Shit”. I am constantly battling with guilt and regret and overthinking most difficult conversations. I need to stop. Also another big one….being ok with people not liking me. Really? Why wouldn’t someone like me? Perfect example….do I like everyone I meet? No? Then why should I expect everyone to like me? Point taken. “Be ok with someone not liking you because there are a million others who do.” I like that.
My big takeaway and something I think everyone needs to be reminded of is this….remember everyone matters. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated, say thank you more, make eye contact when your speaking to someone, be polite and show gratitude. No one is “below” us and we should learn to treat everyone with respect. It really doesn’t seem that hard but we’re all guilty of taking our bad day out on the cashier or yelling at the barista when she gets our order wrong. We need to remember they are just doing their job and we wouldn’t want someone yelling at us at our job right?
I really enjoyed this book and if you want to learn a few things in a lighthearted way I suggest you read it to!

Shit Adults Never Taught Us by Natasha Sattler is a combination of self-help and memoir.

The book is broken down into four different parts, Career & money shit discusses subjects like how to navigate negotiation, Relationship shit talks about real life and how to overcome though moments like break up, Mind shit talks about anxiety and loneliness and other similar feelings, and finally Lift shit, that talks about so many great subjects like protecting your privacy and take control of your life.

I liked the written style and how the author shared her experience. I found the chapters short and to the point. So many are looking for a book to give them solutions or advice for their problem and the titled chapters make that easy if someone doesn’t want to read all of it.
The book is an exceptional combination of the author's experiences and advice. my favorite chapters are:
- Get comfortable saying No
- Break down things that overwhelm you
- Be Okay with people not liking you

This book is the stuff their dad and I have already done in our lives but really didn’t think about talking with the older girls before they left for college. I honestly, in my mind, thought they would graduate college and come back home, but no..these go getters graduated, got jobs, got married, got homes and moved away. This book covers the gaps we never had time to go over them.

Career and Money, Relationship, Mind, and Life Tips all rolled up in a easy to read book.

My favorite part are the “Give It A F***ing Shot” checklists nestled throughout the book. From setting up a 401(K) to handling relationship conflict and finding laughter to making sure you are setting up your yearly checkups. These to do lists are practical and emphasize the topics being discussed.

If you know a young adult or if you are a young adult, this book is easy to read, written in short direct bursts on each subject, and is a handbook for practical life.

I am so happy I found this book. These are one of the phrases I say on a daily basis. I got so angry that my parents didn't teach me all/some of these things, so I am happy I picked up this book so I can learn all of these things. Natasha outlines things such as budgeting, credit, relationships, jobs (which are so helpful, asking for a raise, when to leave your job, and emphasizes why you should NOT date someone at work. This book is for all of the millenials who are struggling with "adulting". Each chapter is broken up into hilarious segments of a certain topic. This book is so funny and well written, I wish I had picked it up sooner. Read this book, you will not regret it!

I was recently in a rut and skimming through this book helped me get out of it!! It was just what I needed!

This is a fun look at navigating adult life with hacks and relatable anecdotes.

It is divided into five sections: Management, Investments, Relationships, Mental Health and Life Hacks.

There are some laugh out loud funny parts.

I really enjoyed the author’s sarcasm and wit!

What an informative read! I think this book would be particularly helpful for young adults getting ready to go out into the big bad world. It’s like having your big sister on paper telling you just what you need to know. That being said, I’m 30 and found helpful stuff in there for me too, including some new tips for handling my anxiety! I didn’t need everything that was in there but the chapters are clearly defined and well organized so you can find what you need when you need it.

Thanks to the author for sending me an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Confession time: even after graduating high school, then graduating college, I had no idea how to file my taxes without my Dad helping me. At the age of 25, when my husband and I were buying our first home- I still had no idea how a mortgage or the process of buying a house ACTUALLY worked. Don’t be like me. Read this book instead.

Shit Adults Never Taught Us by Natasha Sattler is a guide with simple, straightforward advice and the author is honestly hilarious. Divided into four sections: Career & Money Shit, Relationship Shit, Mind Shit and Life Shit- Shit Adults Never Taught Us tackles topics from creating a solid resume to how to put down your phone and engage more in your life.

Settler has managed to write a helpful guide book which feels conversational. While some shy away from cussing (I certainly don’t), I actually found it made the book more approachable. Even when she was tackling topics like discovering she had an autoimmune disease, I felt like I was having a talk over a glass of wine with an old friend. Her approach is raw, funny, and so effective.

From now on, this will be my go to college graduation gift- with a check inside. I mean come on, I know what the kids actually want ($$$$$) but Shit Adults Never Taught Us is the gift they actually need! Out now- go grab a copy today!
