Rate this book
He’s a beast only she can tame

When a dark portal spewing shadow beasts opens into a research facility, Kaida’s unit is dispatched to destroy them. The last thing she expects is for the massive dragon amidst the creatures to claim her. To avoid an intergalactic conflict, and to perform an important mission, she consents to a temporary marriage of convenience with the Shadow Lord Cedros. But with each passing day, she finds herself drawn to the sweet and socially awkward male who lurks within this strong and fearsome protector of his realm.

She’s his peace and his salvation

For decades, Cedros searched in vain for the one female who would silence his growing madness, take away the pain torturing his body, and end the loneliness and isolation that is the curse of a Shadow Lord. Who would have thought she would be an off-worlder? And yet, here she is, his little Kaida, a human so fragile, so delicate, and yet so strong. Her mere presence brings him divine peace. Her simple embrace awakens feelings and emotions he never thought possible.

How can he convince her to stay with him in this world so ill-adapted to her species, and when she didn’t come to him by choice, but out of duty?

3.5 This series is just a bunch of syrupy sweet low angst love stories.
The author could write “I Married My Dyson Vacuum” and I bet it would be a comfy cozy little robot romance. Honestly I’m having a great time reading these and will keep going as long as the author does.
But now I’m just trying to think of all the crazy things to marry…
“I Married A Hedgehog”- and he’s a big softy
“I Married A Batman”- and he loves to take care of the bat cave
“I Married A Turtle”- and he knows how to take his time

I’m sorry, I’m exhausted and this review went off the rails…

Like other reviewers, I was pretty uncomfortable with how much the MFC was forced to assimilate and how little her boundaries seemed to matter to both the MMC and the side characters. She's expected to do basically whatever he wants, unless it makes her *very* uncomfortable?! No level of discomfort below that is acceptable for her speak up? And doing so could stunt this grown-ass man's emotional growth? That was pretty fucked up, especially considering how time much previous books spent on exploring compromise.

I also can't believe she just...rolled over and accepted that terrible 'pet'. Nero terrorized her, she thought she was gonna die, but she decides she'll keep it 'cause...she didn't want to be mean? Fuck that. I'd be so pissed I'd ascend to another plane of existence.

Shadow Lord!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☹️🙃😍
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Solo Narration

The heroine: Kaida - she was an enforcer and part of the main strike team working with the United Planets Organization peacekeeping force, tasked with finding and destroying shadow beasts who came through a portal in a research facility. She was surprised that each of the creatures dissolved when shot with a blaster. When they got to a swarm of the beasts, she saw that the nightmarish creatures were attacking a beautiful dragon. Though the dragon was holding his own, there were a lot of beasts attacking so her team protected the dragon.

The Hero: Cedros - he was a shadow lord who has been searching for his mate for a long time. At his age, he would soon go mad if he didn’t find his mate. He never thought he would find her after traveling through a portal off his world. From the first time he saw her, he felt peace.

The Story: Kaida was in the middle of a firestorm when the dragon landed directly in front of her. He grabbed her and she passed out. When she woke two days later she was told that the dragon was a shadow lord who fights the monsters from the void and they can create portals, like the one that was mistakenly opened by the research facility. She also finds out she is the mate of the shadow lord and if she refuses, it could end in war. She is also asked to take on an undercover mission to find out who is smuggling the stones that the research facility used to open the portals.

Like the previous books, this had a story about another new and complex world. I liked how all the previous books were done so I grabbed this one also. One thing about these books, is you have to listen carefully at the beginning, in order to understand the world and what is going on in that world with other beings, as well as political aspects of the world. Though I do love the fact that each book has a new world and the world building has been great.

This book is told in dual points of view via solo narration and is narrated by Darryl Mayfield. He does a great job and has a very deep voice, but softens it quite a bit for the female voices. I don’t often listen to solo narration books, but this series has been so good. Though I have to admit that this one wasn’t as good as some of the other in the series. I am not sure if it was my mood, that maybe I just wasn’t feeling it because I wasn’t in the mood for a book, but I kept stopping it to watch TV and I fell asleep a few times while listening.

Sugary sweet Cinnamon Roll all the way!! I loved every minute of it.

Don't you just love different cultures and customs....like not wearing clothes. 🤣💅😍

I have a feeling some people are gonna say "it was just okay." or not like the lack of conflict. Sometimes it's nice to just have a man, or should I say Shadow Dragon Lord, that pampers and spoils the h and she just soaks it up. I mean Cedros went to multiple other worlds to get Kaida the food she likes....I can't even get my hubby to pick up our grocery order from the store within the set pick up time.

I love this series. I loved this one.

I think this was my least favorite of the Prime Mating Agency series. Still sweet, still cute… just didn’t have the “oomph” of the other stories.

The whole world building was a little overcomplicated. In earlier books the author does a good job of simplifying it - in book 1, the heroine was raised on a farm planet and winds up on a planet with limited resources that is sort of a tourist destination for rich travelers and she helps the local people learn to farm. In book 3 we quickly learn the set up is between human settlers, the antagonistic minotaur race hunting them, and an intelligent bird species living high above. This one - with the portals, the magic, etc - was a little much.

I didn’t love the set up of Kaida as an “Ejaya” - basically the person who will help a dragon/lord master from going mad. He is soothed only when touching her. That means naked cuddle time is expected, and it leads to murky waters. Like, is she being coerced? Is this consent? Even the story of the heroes brother and his own Ejaya was kind of depressing - she isn’t in love with him but had children with him because she was too jealous to let him have children with someone else, and she knows he is doomed to love/be obsessed with her forever. They kept saying the heroine had a choice, she could leave… she even said even if she left she would be his Ejaya… but it was really impossible to leave/have her own life and NOT be his.

I guess the above two things, and that I didn’t click with the heroine or the overall story, is why this was my least fav. But I’ll be back for future books!

4 stars. This book is low angst, sweet, and immensely enjoyable. I’ve devoured every book in this series and will continue to do so, even if there end up being 30. I just really like how different each book is, how creative the author is with her heroes, and how the heroine is always strong and capable.

I’m not going to bother giving an overview of this book because I think the title makes the plot fairly self-explanatory…. Right? 🙃 And although I did like the majority of this story, I did think that the middle dragged a bit, which is why I bumped the rating down a little.

Safe; non-virgin but celibate heroine, virgin hero, no om/ow drama, no scenes with om/ow, no cheating.

He is a gigantic, immensely powerful dragon man-beast who loves and NEEDS to cuddle. It's a biological necessity BUT WHO CARES I'll take it!!!! He gets utterly blissed out. It was the cutest fucking thing. I had to stop and sit with that for a bit.
Did I mention the sex was hot? 🥵🥵 Also Regine could have squeezed a full length sex scene in the epilogue considering the KINK she teased us with?!? Excuse me Regine?!?! A page or two or ten more?!??!? 😢🥵😢

Respectful, kind, devoted MCs, enough world building to pad a story concentrated on the MCs, minor conflict in the background but unlike contemporary/fantasy/dark romances there is no conflict between the love interests (in any of these books) which is a relief, and thats why, humans of the earth(goodreads); while these books may be accused of being boring by some for using the same trope over and over in similar settings, I call it reliable - to provide the kind of easy respite we all need from time to time from the other romances that take a lot out of us.

Another simple, soft, easy, fluffy, hot book done well. I'll miss this series 😢 I sincerely hope she writes more. I soothe my heart knowing she's written so many other books, I wonder if they are as enjoyable as these ones?

3.5 stars - I really liked the world building in this one and the romance was very sweet! The only thing that I was side eyeing was the pressure the heroine was placed under to totally give up her own culture in service to the hero's - give and take, yes; shaming her for needing time to adjust, no.

**3.5/5 stars**

I'm not sure why but I didn't feel as engaged reading this compared to the previous books. I think the main issue that I had with it was that I wasn't really interested by the whole portals shadow realm thingy. I kind of wish the story had revolved more around Cedros and Kaida and how they had to adapt on a cultural level to make their relationship work. The secret mission Kaida was given by the UPO wasn't developed in a way that really kept me on the edge of my seat. I really struggled with that part of the book.

On a brighter note, I really loved Cedros and the fact Kaida was truly the only one for him. The way he needed her and how much he quickly fell for her was heartwarming. He was protective and understanding and slowly coaxed her into becoming more comfortable with him and her new life on Dramnac. I loved that he was so honest and straightforward with his questions.

He had an aura of boyish innocence about him. From what little I’d been able to find out about his species, I suspected he interacted little with others, which could explain his awkwardness.-Kaida

As for Kaida, although hesitant at first, she opened herself to Cedros, realizing that her human prudishness really didn't make sense on Dramnac. The difference in culture did feel like they were pressuring her into things she wasn't necessarily comfortable doing but I liked that she made an effort to adapt and embraced the Derakeen's lifestyle and whatnot. She was brave and understanding. Her story arc with the UPO's secret mission was limit boring to me, I honestly really didn't care for it at all.

“[...]The true pledge is in your everyday actions and words. I will not promise you the moon, my Kaida. I will give it to you. And if it is beyond my means or abilities, then I won’t have broken a promise and I will at least have taken you to the stars.”-Cedros

BUT, the relationship between the two of them was absolutely the sweetest. I liked how honest they were with each other and that their feelings developed over time. It's a recurring thing in this Prime Mating Agency to have two characters who are so different culturally, emotionally and physically to compromise to make their matchmaking work. I think it's beautiful. Sometimes, love isn't necessarily love at first sight. I think it's good to normalize this sort of romance where the characters nurture their feelings into love, respect and fondness.

Content warning

Like I said, I didn't feel as engaged with this book compared to the other installments but I still enjoyed it overall. This series definitely is an eye-opener when it comes to romance in general. Not everything is as simple as instalove and although this series of books are Sci-Fi erotica, I think there are valuable lessons to learn when reading them such as: compromise, respect, understanding, boundaries, friendship, love. If Ms Abel is writing more, I can definitely say that I will be reading them. And you should too!

CONTENT WARNING FOR THE METRIC SYSTEM.

Some variation of "meter" appears 37 times in this book.
Like all good Americans, I was confused and disoriented.

The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets forty rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I like it!

Besides that, this was super cute and very low angst. Nice MCs, no breakup, no real drama. Just a powerful virgin MMC who's touch-starved and needs to cuddle. It kinda felt like watching Hugo or Elmyra with a bunny rabbit lol. It lost a tiny bit of charm, because she constantly had to negotiate or defend her personal boundaries. I mean, sometimes you gotta let the bunny come to you. 🥴

ps I listened to the audiobook and the narrator, Daryl Mayfield, had a great voice and was perfect as Cedros.

I like this series, and I Married a Dragon has the same components (mutual respect, sweet mushy H, etc) that I love about the series… but… this is the 6th book with basically the same plot, and it's starting to run its course.

The blurb sets this up. Cedros (the dragon) recognizes Kaida as his Ejaya which is basically a non-sexual mate of sorts that keeps the dragon lords sane by hugging/touching them. She agrees to stay/heal him for 6-months.

Bottom Line- Another super sweet, SUPER slow burn romance (takes almost the entire book for commitment) with zero angst and very little conflict. It was Ok for me, but I still like the first two books the best. This H was just a little too squishy for me, and I didn’t care for the way the “baddies” were handled at the end. It felt a bit preachy, and I HATE politics/soap boxing in my reads. For me the most interesting part of the book had nothing to do with the couple/plot. KAYOG’s MARRIED!! There goes my hope of him getting his own book.

Yahoo! This was my first human on dragon romance. And it was pretty…pretty…pretty good. If this is how these creatures treat humans…sign me up! Can you imagine Peter Topside shackin’ up with a dragon lady? And I’d even get a jetpack and some out of this world pampering and lovin? I’m getting so depressed right now. Wishful thinking. Now these stories are almost verbatim the same characters and premise with each installment. Horny human female…forced into a situation with a gorgeous, hybrid creature with robotic mannerisms …passions fly, emotions run high, and the woman is almost split in half by a gigundous mating stem several times. But she digs it. To quote Patrick Swayze from Road House, “Pain don’t hurt.” So why the hell do I keep tuning in, you ask? Always creative, some of the best sex scenes that I’ve ever come across (No joke there.), and written with a high level of skill. My critiques remain the same as in previous books of this series. With such an in-depth thought process to bring these new worlds and creatures to life, they make love like and live with a lot of human concepts. I was wondering why a dragon hybrid like Cedros here has a toilet in his humble abode. And why he called cuddling by that term and not something more relevant to how being so close to Kaida rejuvenated him. Maybe a ‘power boost?’ And why were they not making passionate bedroom boogie on a really high cliff or in mid-air? Why didn’t smoke come out of his nostrils when he climaxed? Why didn’t his seed taste spicy like Taco Bell’s lava sauce? I just feel like there is so much focus on everything else that some of the core concepts in these stories get overlooked a bit. Needless to say, it was still very good and for any single, female dragon ladies from another planet needing a new lifemate, my number is 551…Oops, my wife just saw what I was writing. Why can’t I have a cool octopus creature like Nero in this story to distract her, in order to make my escape? Oh well, guess it’ll be another night on the couch for your favorite author here.

There’s so much I love about this series and I’ll keep reading every one of them! This book, despite the adorable and cuddly hero, missed the mark a bit for me. The culture clashing with this world had an edge of uncomfortableness for me. The story is still low angst and fluffy like the others though thankfully. I thought this book also had more typos than the others have had and they did take me out of the story at times. The middle also lagged a bit for me. Still, the heroine is capable and strong while being adaptable and kind. The hero is awkward but super loving. The world building was interesting and there’s also an adorable (if slightly terrifying sounding) pet. Big plus, the epilogues throughout this series have been wonderful. The story is told in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, H is a virgin and h is not, bc mentioned. I’ll be anxiously waiting to see where Ms. Abel takes us next!

Not the right time for this book

So previously I've enjoyed these books. Most of them that have the MCs coerced into a marriage of convenience, instead of seeking one, it benefited both parties in some way. Usually more so the FMC.

But how the author framed that "coerced into a marriage of convenience" in this book was poorly thought out for the current political atmosphere of the world in general and the US in particular.

The FMC in this book apparently is a special someone to the MMC. Not because they know each other, they don't, but because of some kind of fated mate business. Maybe it was her smell, because they met while he was a giant dragon fighting creatures and she was basically SWAT back up at the back of the room.

He, apparently, went into some kind of battle mode in the first chapter and proximity to her, a stranger, makes him calmer for some reason. His government, some kind of council, now demands she marry him, move to their realm, and leave her entire life, or they will declare war. For some reason that's unclear to us. We can only assume fated mates, because that was not explained. The marriage is only going to last 6 months, because this is the Prime Mating Agengy series and we need to keep that runner going. However there is heavy implication his government won't ever let her leave the arrangement. The MMC, to his credit, seems to want her to make her own choice.

Considering women in the US are having their choices and rights stripped away and, subsequently, their lives dictated by their government, this was a poor choice on the part of the author. Too soon.

As soon as I read that, I had zero desire to read this book. I mean, I feel bad for the guy that he can't un-Hulk on his own, but I don't see how that's the FMC's problem or responsibility. The fact that there is an undercover mission doesn't change anything, I'm fairly certain that is made up to trick the FMC into not putting up a fight on going. To add insult to injury, the bird alien Voln, a previous champion of his clients, was smugly saying "I know you'll go and I know you'll stay". If that was said to me while I was being forced out of my life and my home as some sort of "avoid the war" bride to a guy who just tried to kill me, I'd punch him in his bird face.

These books are supposed to be light, fluffy, and low angst. I feel absolutely catfished and it's the first chapter.

The intro to this book was very much not thought out and did not seem to be vetted by an unbiased third party.

Oh my god. Cedros!😍😻
This was SO fucking sweet!

I fell totally, fully in love with Cedros.
He’s an absolute sweetheart.

I loved this addition to this series. I’ve loved every book in the series so far, and this was no different.

Kaida is a badass and yet she’s so understanding and sweet with Cedros.
That’s not to say her human inhibitions and habits don’t get in the way a bit, but she tries and watching them figure things out together was so rewarding and fun.

I just loved this book so much.
It was full of otherworldly culture and practices. The species had really cool and interesting features and ‘powers’ that were partially explained pretty cleverly through investigation into illegal activity on the planet.

The plot was interesting.
The sex was hot (though slow burn).
The characters were so lovable.
The culture and politics were engrossing and entertaining.

I just really loved it.
Im hoping this series never ends honestly.
I can’t wait to see what’s next.

It was a decent book. I personally thought it is not as great as the previous book in the series but the world-building was fun.

While I did somewhat like the puppy-like demeanor of the male lead, I did not particularly love how the main character accustomed herself into the culture. I really did not like the way how everyone was pretty much pressuring this girl into fully intergrating into this very open, nude, and 'affectionate' culture. Like my goodness she was there for barely a month and they were trying to guilt-trip her for being shy and having boundaries. MFs wanted her to go completely nude all the time and immediately while also fully accommodating her hubby, geez! It honestly pissed me off! It really felt like forced assimilation and really struck a personal nerve 😭.

It seriously ruined the experience for me, really disappointed especially considering how "I Married a Naga" did the opposite treatment in regards to the wife acclimating to the culture. *sigh*

If you liked the other books in the series, there's more of the same here. Powerful and badass hero who's a total cinnamon roll for the female love interest. Honorable and capable heroine who ends up being the hero's salvation. Discovery of a new world with its own unique fauna and flora, with an added twist of portals and a new shadow realm.

So why 2 stars, when I've given 4 star ratings to previous books ? First of, the world described here was way too intricate for a book that is a romance as well as sci-fi. The portals, the shadow realms, phasing... I ended up skipping over those parts, I didn't understand everything and didn't care to. It's not that I don't enjoy sci-fi, but then I'd prefer to read a full on sci-fi book.

Second, it is becoming repetitive (and boring). The author tries to shake things up with a new world, new circumstances around a mating. But if you break things down, it's all the same.

But what really tanks the rating for me is some problematic stuff in the romance. Here's the passage that made me almost DNF the book :

My cheeks all but burst into flames. "What are you saying?" I asked, the defensiveness seeping back into my voice. "Should I just let him have his way with whatever he asks or wants?"

"Yes," she said, as if it was self-evident. "You should only refuse him if you believe it is bad for him or if it strongly makes you uncomfortable. Your purpose as an Ejaya is to keep him healthy and make him happy by whatever means necessary."

Humans being weird for having clothes and being embarrassed to do certain things in front of others (like getting naked, washing yourself, using a toilet,...) is nothing new in the series (again, very stereotypical view of what is a primitive civilization). And I'm no prude, I do think our society cares too much about what and how much people wear. But it goes the other way around too: I don't think it's ok to judge people if they wear "too much". Again, the "prime" population wearing (almost) no clothes and finding the human heroine weird for doing so is nothing new in this series.

But this book takes it to the next level. There's the trope "forced proximity", and then FORCED proximity. Since it is made clear in the book that the heroine shouldn't have sex with the hero if she doesn't want to, some may think it's all innocent. It's not. She's basically being told that she's a bad person (or at least a bad Ejaya) if she doesn't cuddle with him naked, and if she voices being uncomfortable at some of his actions and questions. Her boundaries and comfort levels just don't matter. Big yikes from me.

DNF at 39%. I want to like this book so much. I struggle with how easily this author’s main characters deal with cross-cultural communication and marriages. They both just take this all in stride. And, that would be fine except for the fact that this woman is being put into an uncomfortable situation and constantly allows herself to be pressured into being more intimate than she wants to be.

We are told that it’s for the good of the universe that she allows herself to be cuddled by a dragon. He’s hot so that’s cool. But, even though he knows that she is not interested in anything intimate, he doesn’t seem to understand basic boundaries like don’t come into the bathroom when she’s peeing or pooping or don’t come into the bathroom while she’s showering. Even when she tells him that she’s uncomfortable with him in the bathroom while she’s naked in the shower, he remains to have an ongoing conversation with her.

And, directly after the conversation where she says that she’s not comfortable being nude with him, she decides she needs to get over it and takes off her shirt so he can fondle her.

It’d be one thing if I felt like she was at the same place as he was but I don’t feel like she is! So it just starts feeling like one of those crappy dates we have on earth where a guy pressures you for something you’re not ready for and you give in because it’s more important to him then it is to you.

As always, Regine Abel has given us a story that highlights some of the healthiest points of being in a relationship. A story full of interesting characters and a world where it seems very plausible they would flourish.

Sometimes all you need is a overly sweet sci-fi romance with a scaly and devoted dragon. After a rift opens, Shadow Lord Cedros, immediately knows Kaida is his Ejaya. In many ways being an Ejaya is like that of a mate only it doesn’t always have to be romantic. However Kaida will learn close contact, such as skin to skin contact is like otherworldly to Cedros and she’s like his calm and peace in the world. While the two enter into a short term agreement, Cedros makes it very clear from the start he plans to make Kaida his. Even though he’s a fearsome dragon he truly has a soft side and his dedication and love for Kaida knows no bounds. Given their arrangement, the relationship is rather slow burn and things slowly intensify between the two. More like for Kaida it becomes impossible to deny the pull between them and it really doesn’t take them long 😜 In the beginning there are some cultural differences between them that made for interesting bonding moments between them. Even going to the bathroom is a whole different experience for Cedros and his people. At one point Kaida, and her weak human form, is literally blasted across the room by his bidet and that still has me chuckling 🤣 This was another fun and totally sweet read, minimal action or drama but with a virginal hero. Also, like the other books in the series, this completely stands alone.

The hero is a virgin and has never had a girlfriend before. I didn't like how he kept pressuring her to get naked because he needed to cuddle with her to eliminate the toxins from fighting the bad guys. She kept trying to keep her panties and bra on and he kept saying it would be better if she were naked.

Not okay.

Then he keeps saying he wants her to be his mate but she can always say no. So she does a complete turnaround and says she's been selfish and being naked in front of him isn't a big deal and he won't hurt her. Since he needs her naked to heal fastest.

I preferred some of the earlier heroes.

DNF at 52%. I tried, I really did, but I really disliked how the FMC’s boundaries were constantly stomped over and she was guilt tripped for them. Maybe it gets better and the MMC learns to compromise in the later half of the book but I’ve read enough.

This was cute 😍

Kaida never expected to be tackled by a dragon.. or to find out she’s important to him and must consent to a marriage of convenience to avoid intergalactic conflict. Cedros never thought he would find the one female who can help him with his curse. He has 6 months to get her to fall in love with her new home, because he knows she’ll never love a beast like him.

What a cuddly teddy bear Cedros is. It’s sad how sure he is that Kaida wont be attracted to him.. I loved his reaction to her reacting to him. He is just so sweet.

I loved that Kaida goes into the marriage with an open mind and is genuinely curious about Cedros and his kind. Their ending was so beautiful. ❤️
