[Imadoki!] #1

Imadoki!: Nowadays, Vol. 1

Rate this book
For Tanpopo Yamazaki, life at the elitist Meiô Academy seems way out of her league. The daughters of wealthy families snub her; other students make light of the fact that she actually tested into Meiô instead of relying on family connections, and the cute boy she saw tending a dandelion the day before wouldn't even acknowledge her existence. Hoping to make friends and have some fun, Tanpopo starts up a gardening committee, but will this help her survive in a school where superficiality and nepotism reign supreme? IMA DOKI follows the trials and tribulations of a budding horticulturist as she makes her way down the winding road to friendship. From Yû Watase, one of Japan's most beloved shô jo artists, IMA DOKI packs comedic charm and heartfelt antics into an adorable bouquet of whimsical fantasy.

Review for complete series

At its core, this is your standard shoujo manga about a naive country bumpkin who finds herself out of place at her new elite school. Tanpopo moves to Tokyo to attend a top school which largely consists of wealthy students or ones of influential families. She soon finds that her plan to make many friends won't be easy as everyone looks down on her because of her more simple background. Tanpopo doesn't give up that easily though and tries to face things with optimism. One student in particular has caught her attention: Kugyou might be the untouchable elite student, but Tanpopo knows of his secret love for gardening and is sure they can form a friendship around that.

While Imadoki has a plot like many others of its kind and you can guess the love interest from page one, I've actually always really enjoyed this manga. There is something nostalgic about it, and by that I am not even referring to having read this a long time ago. In fact, I read it quite a bit after it's publication and it is by no means one of the works that originally got me invested into manga. No, it's just the style and execution that bring together a lot of aspects I associate and like about manga from that time period. It is by no means perfect, but there's something very loveable about it.

Tanpopo certainly is a naive character, but not as bad as some people make her out to be. I like her and while she does seem a little slow in catching on, she does also see things for what they are. She initially gets bullied quite a bit and she just smiles it all away and acts like she doesn't understand what's happening. The truth is that she does fully understand the situation but decides to stand above it. I quite liked her attitude toward the bullies - she didn't let them discourage her nor did she let them rattle her and argue with them. Her insistence of making friends can come across as a little too idealistic, but friendship does become a core part of this story and it generally delivers a nice message.

I like the romance well enough but above all I really enjoy the friendships that form in this manga. They're a colourful bunch, perhaps a little tropey, but perfectly likeable. I loved the humour and nicknames they gave each other - I loved how they quarrelled and at the same time supported each other resolutely. Although it is generally a light-hearted manga, it does also cover a few darker subjects including but not limited to suicide and abortion. As this is not a long manga, it doesn't delve into great detail but I felt it handled these subjects fairly well.

On the down side, Imadoki has one of the most annoying meddling fiancées who only barely manages to earn some redemption toward the end. The plot is occasionally a little jumpy, especially for the latter two volumes. I can see why this is not everyone's cup of tea, but apart from these two issues, I really enjoy this manga and return to it every now and again. The art isn't Watase at her best but it certainly is cute.

First volume of a popular series, of which I might read more since some of my friends here love it.

Tanpopo is a working class girl who uses "cram school" to get into rich kids' Meiô Academy. She's pretty clueless, at the start. But it seems she's a budding horticulturalist, so she starts up a gardening committee, which may or not help her popularity. She also carries around a fox everywhere.

Maybe it's a little like that movie Pretty in Pink?

Watase's art is really good, and it looks like a social mores comedy, basically. Good school-based manga.

Ahhhhh this was so cute <3

Also DANDELIONS omg what

Just the whole gardening idea was so random but so cute at the same time and the art is adorable.

I lived for this stuff back in the day, along with my obsession for Fruits Basket and Hana Kimi. This was not quite that level cute but still ADORABLE.

Imadoki is about a girl named Tanpopo (which means dandelion in Japanese) who moves from Hokkaido to Tokyo and gets into a prestigious high school.

Is it clean? This one was meh. There is a side character who is portrayed as slutty and is pregnant. She also goes to bars and drinks and smokes. This is very obviously discouraged though. There were some jokes that I didn’t understand, but I got the feeling that they were dirty. Also, near the end a girl attempts suicide.

The relationship between the characters in this series seemed forced. I didn’t enjoy Tanpopo and Koki’s relationship. (Koki is the main love interest) It felt very unlikely, and before it developed very far they were separated most of the second half due to many improbable circumstances. Tanpopo becomes best friends with a girl whose main character traits seem to be greed and deceitfulness. Another “friend” hacks into the school system to torture Tanpopo, and then holds Tanpopo at gunpoint (it wasn’t a real gun, but still…). Once he is foiled, he threatens them and then asks to be their friend. What??? Put this guy in an insane asylum, not in a gardening club! I know that these occurrences are meant to be humorous, but that’s not funny, that's disturbing and sick!

Speaking of which, I didn’t like the humor in this book. I either did not find it funny or did not understand it. This might be due to the translation from Japanese to English, but I feel like the humor was just very immature.

The school was very interesting. It had elevators, key cards that access everything from meals to getting into classes, and plastic plants. The plastic plants were especially odd. Banning plants won’t prevent pollen from coming into school grounds from outside sources, it’s bad for the environment, and it seems like a waste of money. Also, I saw trees and things like that around the school. Are those plastic too? If so, when the gardening club replaced all the plastic plants with real ones how did they transplant fully grown trees? All that I ever saw the gardening club do was plant and water flowers…

I really liked that the teenager who got pregnant, Arisa, didn’t get an abortion. I agree with her. It’s not the baby’s fault that someone made a bad decision. Usually pregnancies in high school end in abortion, so I was pleasantly surprised. I was also happy that she saw the baby as an actual human being and not just an annoyance to get rid of.

I like the idea in the first half of the series that friendship is not about what you can get out of others. I completely agree with that, and feel like most of the world has come to that consensus. During the second half, the main theme was that everyone needs to “bloom in their own way”. I thought that this was kinda vague, and not explained. What if “my own way” is becoming a serial killer? (a valid concern considering that one of the main characters was insane…) I just feel like it is much too vague a notion, and could be used very negatively.

Overall, I didn’t like this series. It’s not worth the time it takes to read it. It has some interesting concepts, but a lot of it is overused tropes and unnecessary drama. That combined with the questionable content just makes this manga one that I would not recommend

Haven't I read this before? Poor student at a rich school, teased for being poor, aloof potential love interest? If anything distinguishes Imadoki from the hordes of similar books, it's that the heroine is unusually annoying, naive, and slow to catch on. Yeah, no thanks. That said, Yuu Watase is a great artist, and I do love looking at her work. It's a shame that I haven't yet found anything that by her that I like to read as much as I like to look at it.

You know, it seems I read a lot of works by Yuu Watase without even realizing it... Some manga you look at and go, "Wow! This must be by so-and-so!" because the art's so distinctive (like CLAMP. No mistaking them for something else), but in the case of Watase, hers is so... generic. So many shoujo have this style that it just doesn't stand out.

Imadoki centers around Tanpopo, who is an idealistic moron who doesn't have a single brain cell in that empty head of hers. While I don't mind characters who are airheads sometimes, there's a limit to just how dumb they can get. How'd a girl with this low of an IQ get into a school like the one in this manga? I mean, really? I know this is fiction, but there's only so far you can go...

This was like Boys Over Flowers: Hana Yori Dango light. At least Boys Over Flowers' main character had a brain and a stubborn streak. Tanpopo is just too stupid to figure out when to give up.

I was very disappointed in this.

This volume kicks off with Chapter:1-6.

This was a really charming plot to me; with its more realistic everyday romance as opposed to a paranormal twist. The art of course was classic Watase, and I loved every frame. The beginning of the story is hysterically absurd, and you don't think that this story will get off of the ground. The main character is appealingly surprising though, and her obvious love interest is adorable and full of conflict.
I wasn't intending to read this manga again, but I ended up diving into my manga collection and reading it again just so I could review it for everyone.

I'll write more when editing mode hits me.
Have fun reading!

Watase ought to stick to romantic comedy, it is what she does best after all, her dramatic storylines always dive into soap territory. Her art as always is flawless and some of the prettiest I have seen. She seems to draw better contemporary manga than anything else.

This is actually a manga that I read the first two volumes of many years ago and then stopped because either there weren't any more at the time or because I couldn't find any more. When I found out there were more, I went out and found all the volumes so I could re-read the first two and move on to the rest.

I really like this series. It's very cute. Some of it's a little confusing because the cultural references aren't always explained (I'm guessing the vase of flowers on the desk is a reference to student death or something, but I don't know, because that doesn't cross over culturally and it isn't explained) but I still like it a lot.

Tanpopo is not at all a complex or nuanced character. Other characters in the story are, and maybe Tanpopo will become so eventually, but not yet. Right now she's incredibly one dimensional. It's still a fun story that I like immensely, but she's not a multifaceted character.

But the story is very upbeat and nice. I look forward to reading the next volume (again) and reading the rest of the series.

I always think that this is the shorter version of Hana Yori Dango.

Mostly light hearted and goofy, although there is some bullying and attempted backstabbing. The way all the negativity is dismissed by the protagonist is admirable and refreshing. I may check out the next volume.

Straightforward and absolutely adorable. Tanpopo moves to the city from the countryside to attend an elite academy. All the things that make her “average” at the school actually make her charming and loveable. I’m obsessed with this story and love that they bond over flowers! There were several moments that had me laughing and others that I thought pushed the story forward well. I think the blurb says it best, “Imādoki! packs comedic charm and heartfelt antics…”

I've broken into enough anime and manga to say with confidence that this is NOT an original story. Hardly. Poor girl attends super elite school. Snobby school body hates her guts and continually torments her, but one aloof handsome love interest stands by her side. Plus a collection of quirky sidekicks, and let's not forget the jealous female rival. This is "Kitchen Princess," "The Gentleman's Alliance Cross," and many other manga titles that I can't think of. Heck, it's even more simplistic than those aforementioned stories!

.... And yet.... I still love it. Why? Perhaps it's because Yuu Watase has an addicting style that I can't stay away from. Perhaps it's because it's not too long-winded (which is, honest to gods, the most refreshing asset in the long run). But I think what really attracts me is our young heroine, Tanpopo Yamazaki. She's naive beyond belief, stupid, reckless, and doesn't know how to take a hint. But my gods, she has guts!! It's not easy to fight back against bullies, and it sure as hell isn't easy to "fight with love." She faces each harassment with a smile and a shrug of the shoulders, without a single tear. In fact, the only times she reacts negatively is when someone else involved is hurt on her behalf. And yes, the flowers count as "someone else."

I always admire and aspire to be the optimist. Cynics may find them annoying or unintelligent, and granted, especially in the manga/anime world, it's next to impossible to find a character who's both sweetly idealistic AND smart. Needless to say, I don't mind this trope, if it's done right. And I cannot deny that there have been countless cases where the airheaded heroine is more of a pain in the ass than anything else (*cough* Full Moon! *cough* Absolute Boyfriend! *cough cough*) And yet, there are ALSO many beloved idiots in this medium who one can't help but root for: Tohru Honda, from "Fruits Basket," Usagi Tsukino, from "Sailor Moon," Chii or Elda from "Chobits," Sakura, from "Cardcaptor Sakura" or "Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle," Najika Kazami, from "Kitchen Princess," Hikari Hanazono, from "Special A," etc etc etc....

You could argue that all of the above girls provides something other than "sweet personality" (Sailor Moon's powers, Najika's cooking skills, Hikari's badassery in EVERYTHING other than common sense, etc), but sometimes, I like a little simplicity. I like that Tanpopo has nothing going for her other than kindness, because she's very similar to Tohru Honda that way. Circumstances mold her story, while her bubbly and eternally "silver lining" attitude holds her strong above the rest.

Maybe I'm giving her too much credit, or maybe I envy how she can handle so much crap whereas when I was her age, I easily crumbled. In any case, I felt like writing a review in her defense, because I think "nowadays" people just don't appreciate a good old optimist to bring a little happiness into the world.

*baca ulang*

Manga favorit saya saat SMA nih. Saya ngoleksi semuanya, meskipun sekarang ga tau dimana rimbanya.. Huuaaaa!!! Siapa yang minjem woy?! Balikinnn!!! TT________TT

Ketika baca ulang, ternyata feelnya rada beda ya. Mungkin karena dulu saya masih polos, jadi rasanya asyik-asyik aja. *tarikmaangg

Tapi sekarang, ketika baca ulang, saya jadi berpikir... Tanpopo no you na amai hito tte oru ka?" Ada gitu ya orang yang polosnya keterlaluan kayak si Tanpopo.. xDD

Meskipun begitu, saya masih menikmati ceritanya sih. Terutama karena sekarang saya nyoba baca rawnya, jadi lucu banget pas tau si Kouki ngomong pake Kansai-ben! xD Yappa, omoroi ya de~

Yappari, Watase Yuu no jooku wa saikou~ xDD

Lanjutannya dibaca lagi nanti. Soalnya klo baca manga biasa setengah jam beres, baca manga raw butuh waktu seharian! Apalagi udah lama banget ga baca yg raw-raw.. Bikin mata picek aja dah... =_____=

Zum Inhalt (Booklet):
Unsere Heldin heiß Tanpopo, was auf Japanisch Löwenzahn bedeutet.

Fazit:
4 von 5 Sterne

(disclaimer) Ini komik udah lama aku baca. Kira-kira aku baca ini sekitar kelas 3 SD, tahun 2011(??) Maybe?

I know Kouki, having a trust issue is such a big deal.

My goal is to discover older manga (specifically shojo series) bc after enjoying a bit of the anime Kare Kano, I think the storytelling from these 90's/2000's mangas are definitely unique & something I'd like to branch out into read more from! Imadoki is a funny, drama-filled high school series about a girl who transfers to an elite academy and meets a wealthy popular student looking after flowers on campus - but the following day he pretends like he doesn't know her. Really enjoyed the plot, the main characters & while the drama can seem rather silly, the relationship between the main characters + focus on friendship makes this a stand out manga I'm glad I gave a try!
Imadoki has all those early 2k shojo vibes that I liked from the spunky heroine to the emotionally distant / secretive love interest - Koki Kugiyo.

The series delves into how friendships are something entirely different at Meio Academy in a way that felt believable for the main characters (even if the bully characters could get rather tropey & predictable) - the biggest highlight was seeing Yamazaki determination to keep the garden growing and show Kugiyo she's a genuine friend! Even potential friend Tsuki was full of surprises - the first volume was more about characters and while the plot was heavy in this one, it does leave you with surprises about the cast & where the story is going!

May continue the other volumes in the future, but overall I thought the relationship between the mc's was pretty refreshing to read - glad I discovered this series!!

Very cute and lighthearted. The plot is VERY expected, poor girl meets rich guy theme. The girl, in this case, is SUPER dense and sees legit the best in every scenario. I feel like the guy will start to like her early on, and she's gonna be oblivious. Honestly a cliche but best ship route for romcom. I got to say she's so friendly to everyone and sooo resistant to bullying. I would've cracked 100%. Gotta love her tenacity. Also the fact that the 2nd girl (the 'mean' one who just wants the rich guy's money) is actually really honest and not exactly mean anymore... Idk I sorta love her. She's very blunt in that she wants the guy's money and doesn't exactly like the guy. Same girl same, #moneyforlife. Idk I found this story really light and refreshing. And for a 30-minute read, I'd say very worth it as well.

I love the series because THE FRIENDSHIP!! Man, I wish I had friends like them. We had the bubbly happy go lucky unwavering girl, the rich smart but somewhat dumb heartthrob, the rich tech savvy guy who likes to prank for his amusement, the wild girl with soft heart underneath, and the cocky nerd who underneath her harsh exterior cares for her friends deeply. Those just a bunch of people who at first we cant see as a gang but against all odd are good friends. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Laugh and cried at the same time.

I like the art style. I like Yuu Warsaw’s story ideas. I usually like it all! And Imadoki! is no exception!

I enjoy Tanpopo’s personality. She is like a dandelion (like her name translates to). She’s bright, friendly and carefree. But there are people out there who think dandelions are weeds. So everyone at Meio high is mean to Tanpopo. But she doesn’t let them get her down. I love it!

Tanpopo just wants to be friends with everyone! And Koki (love interest) is the opposite.... for now!

Read this when I was in high school. A contemporary manga about a girl from the countryside moving to the city to attend a rich-people school and things that she has to deal with. Fun characters, slap stick humor (a la Watase-sensei), and ridiculous over-the-top relationship ~drama~.

This is just a cute and whimsical edging on the side of ridiculous story about a very happy-go-lucky girl who wants to see the best in those she calls her friends. She reminds me a little of Star Girl and has a pet fox. Her name is dandelion, and she is quite the dandy lion--fierce, loyal, and weird in an endearing way. I couldnt6stope myself from rereading this once I opened it up.

I LOVE IMADOKI!!! :D These mangas were my FAVORITE as a teenager. I couldn't wait to get home from school and dive into them. The characters are realistic portrayals of young adolescents, the coming-of-age stories for each character are sweet, and the art is just beautiful. This is hands down one of my favorite stories I've ever read.

The art feels classic shojo but a little better, and the story is interesting enough that I wanna continue. I haven't read very much shojo, so I'm sure a lot of the cliches are being missed by me, but even the ones I recognize don't bother me very much, but maybe that's because I like looking at art so much.

There is not enough suspension of disbelief in the universe to make this story plausible! A girl leaves home and comes to school in Tokyo (by herself) where everyone belittles (they call her weed) and bullies her and she accepts it and smiles through it all.

I have two more volumes to go; I hope it improves.
