Long lived, hardy, herbaceous, bush like perennial with divided leaves that are maroon in spring and turn green. Plants bear huge, fragrant flowers that are a good summer cut flower. Not particular about soil. Grow in full sun or light shade for best flower production. Mulch to keep roots cool and moist. Do not over fertilize. Leaf spots can be a problem if plants have too much nitrogen. Plant peonies in a row for a hedge or plant in sunny border. Plant with spring bulbs and their expanding foliage will shroud declining bulb foliage. Plant with Siberian iris, foxgloves, poppies, salvia, dianthus, rudbeckia, and daisies.
