The Guam National Tennis Federation is welcoming Guam's tennis enthusiasts and even those who think they might like the sport, to an islandwide tennis carnival starting at 1 p.m. Jan. 25 at its new Guam National Tennis Center in Dededo.

The facility sits next to the Dededo Sports Complex on Harmon Loop Road.

Six full-sized courts and four youth courts await visitors for the center's first public event since it opened its doors Jan. 11. It also marks the completion of Phase 1 of the project. Other phases include more courts, said Torgun Smith, federation present.

"It's a free day for everyone to come out and play games and have fun. We'll have some competitive things, some skills competition and lots of fun things for kids on the kids' court," he said. "Parking is good, but hopefully we'll have a parking problem because so many people want to come out."

The youth tennis carnival is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., while the Fast4 tournament and skill challenges run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participation is free.

The latest in court surface technology and lighting went into the construction of the courts, said Smith.

"These lights, they are amazing. You've never seen lights like this before for any tennis court," said Smith. "They are LED and they are very bright."

The federation will also continue its membership drive and have included membership fees in the cost for the Center's annual membership dues of $365. For those 18 and under, the annual fees are $50 and the kids courts will always be free for kids 12 and under, he said.

Smith also announced the federation will welcome new coach and former No. 1 seed for the University of Hawaii's Wahines, Cindy Nguyen, to Guam. Besides coaching, she will also manage the new facility in Dededo.

"We hope this can become a long-term thing," said Smith.
