Spiky David Moyes has taken exception to being questioned on two key West Ham matters after a dismal week.

It’s been West Ham’s worst week for many months after back-to-back defeats to Aston Villa and Olympiacos.

Both tough assignments on paper and both failed to give West Ham a timely reminder there is plenty of work to do if they want to be a team capable of seriously competing.

Many fans feel David Moyes got his team selection and approach for both games wrong.

Particularly the game in Greece which was the toughest of West Ham’s Europa League group.

The general consensus is that the manager was too concerned about giving players game time than selecting the right players and team to get a positive result in a testing atmosphere.

Of course team spirit is a big thing at any football club. So Moyes has to get the balance right. But it is fair to say he got it wrong this week.

This week on Hammers News we stated the manager should not be making any big changes for the game.

He didn’t take too kindly to being grilled on the matter in his latest press conference, though.

The Scot took umbrage to having his changes questioned. And particularly didn’t like seeing the team spirit questioned.

“You have to look back at those 17 unbeaten games and in all 17 we’ve made changes,” Moyes responded when questioned on the matter.

“I’ve always wanted to use players in the squad, give them the opportunity to show what they can do and we did it last night. What I will say this year’s is the hardest group we’ve been drawn in.

“The spirits are great, we don’t need to lift the spirits as they are terrific.”

The manager appeared to be rattled by the two perfectly legitimate questions.

But it is good to hear team spirit remains high.

Because it needs to be as the Hammers face a run of five games in 15 days which could very much shape what the rest of the season looks like.
