JOHN ERSKINE
Author and educator John Erskine wrote this short of note of thanks
on a card in 1933 to thank the recipient for what he said about a Fourth of July
function.
Autograph letter signed "John Erskine". 1 page, 5¼x3¼
fabric-textured card. July 15, 1933. In full: "Dear Mr Mayer Thanks
for what you wrote about the Fourth of July [illegible]!
Faithfully yours". Poet, essayist and novelist Erskine (1879-1951)
published his first novel, The Private Life of Helen of Troy, in 1925. A
professor of literature at Columbia University, Erskine initiated an honors
course in classic texts, greatly influencing ideas of general education in the
U. S. His most famous essay was titled The Moral Obligation To Be
Intelligent. A composer and music critic, Erskine also served as
first President of the Julliard School of Music (1928-1937). Lightly
toned and stained. Paper loss, which touches salutation but not signature.
Rounded corners. Paper clip impression at top edge. Mounting residue on verso
(no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
