LENNIE HAYTON
Rare signed photo of a youthful Hayton, inscribed to Mischa, "may our friendship last
forever"
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To my good friend - Mischa/May our friendship last
forever/Lennie 'Shranny' [?] Hayton". B/w, 8x10. Leonard George "Lennie" Hayton
(1908-1971), originally a jazz pianist with Bix Beiderbecke, Paul Whiteman and others,
composed "Apple Blossoms" and other popular songs. He arranged music for Artie Shaw and
Frank Sinatra, among others. Hayton was music director at MGM (1940-1953), the era of
the studios great musicals, and he won Oscars for On the Town (1950) and Hello, Dolly
(1969). Hayton met singer/actress Lena Horne on the set of Stormy Weather (1943), and
they were wed secretly in France in 1947. After their marriage was made public in Life
magazine (1950), the interracial couple received death threats and other hate mail, forcing
Hayton to buy a shotgun and build a wall around their home. The nickname Hayton has
inserted here is a mystery. Current sources don't identify him with any nickname close to this
one. Perhaps it was a private joke between Hayton and his friend Mischa. Vertical fold crease
