Nigel Terry, the English actor who starred as King Arthur in John Boorman‘s 1981 medieval drama Excalibur, has died of emphysema, The Guardian of London reported. He was 69.
Terry made an impressive movie debut as a young Prince John alongside Peter O’Toole and eventual best actress Oscar winner Katharine Hepburn in The Lion in Winter (1968), but he did not appear in a credited role on the big screen until the Boorman epic. In between, he worked often on the British stage.
Terry played the title role of a 17th-century Italian painter in Caravaggio (1986), helmed by Derek Jarman, and the pair went on to collaborate on The Last of England (1988), War Requiem (1989) — the last onscreen appearance of Laurence Olivier — Edward II (1991) and Blue (1993).
Terry’s resume also includes Deja Vu (1985) opposite Jacklyn Smith and the horror thriller Feardotcom (2002). He also played a Trojan priest and adviser to O’Toole’s King Priam in Troy (2004), starring Brad Pitt.
On television, Terry portrayed the knight Sir Thomas Grey in the 1990s British series Covington Cross, which aired on ABC in the U.S.
