In her new memoir My Journey, Donna Karan shares intimate details about her childhood, her ascension to being one of the most respectable designers in the fashion industry and her two marriages. One of the most shocking revelations from the recently released tome is her admission of her abortion in 1973.
At the time, the designer was married to Mark Karan, but involved in an affair with artist Stephan Weiss, whom she would then marry in 1983 after leaving her first husband. Because of her situation, “we weren’t sure whose child it was,” she said in a interview with HuffPost Live on Friday. Ending her pregnancy was “difficult,” she shared, “but that was the life I was living at that moment in time.”

She continued: “I said, ‘I can’t even fathom doing this,’ and abortion had just been legalized — it was that week. I told Mark about it and I said, ‘I really think this is what I have to do, and he agreed with me and supported me completely on it.”
Karan — who has a daughter named Gabby Karan De Felice from her first marriage, and two stepchildren Cory Weiss and Lisa Weiss — decided to open up about her abortion to connect with those who may have gone through it, too.
“I know so many times that women really go ‘What do I do? How do I handle this?’ and I wanted to show that I’m with them,” she said. “I totally understand what it’s like — I went through it.”
