Kellyanne Conway, a senior advisor to President Donald Trump, will leave the White House by the end of the month.
In a statement posted to Twitter, she cited family reasons for stepping down from her role as White House counselor. The news comes on the eve of the Republican National Convention, where Conway is scheduled to speak, and mere months before the election. Her husband George Conway, a prominent D.C. lawyer and fierce critic of the president, also announced at the same time via Twitter that he is stepping back from his role at the anti-Trump political group The Lincoln Project which he co-founded. “So I’m withdrawing from @ProjectLincoln to devote more time to family matters. And I’ll be taking a Twitter hiatus. Needless to say, I continue to support the Lincoln Project and its mission. Passionately,” George Conway tweeted.

The political power couple has long kept their stark differences concerning Trump and his administration largely private, with only occasional hints at tension. “I will be transitioning from the White House by the end of the month,” Conway said in her statement. “George is also making changes. We disagree about plenty but we are united on what matters most: the kids. Our four children are teens and ’tweens starting a new academic year, in middle school and high school, remotely from home for at least a few months. As millions of parents nationwide know, kids “doing school from home” requires a level of attention and vigilance that is as unusual as these times. This is completely my choice and my voice. In time, I will announce future plans. For now, and for my beloved children, it will be less drama, more mama.”
Conway is one of Trump’s longest-serving senior advisors and helped run his campaign in 2016, and became the first female campaign manager to win a presidential election. Her subsequent tenure as a senior White House advisor has been riven with controversy, with Conway on a number occasions widely criticized for offering “alternative facts” to defend the president.
