Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., will step down as chairman of The New York Times Company and retire from the newspaper’s board by the end of December.
He will be replaced by his son, A.G. Sulzberger, who has been the Times‘ publisher since 2018. Sulzberger Jr. will become chairman emeritus, the company said on Wednesday.
Sulzberger Jr., a fourth-generation member of the Sulzberger family that has owned the Times since 1896, joined the newspaper as a correspondent in 1978. He became publisher of the Times in 1992 and the company chairman in 1997, succeeding his father Arthur Ochs Sulzberger.
Under Sulzberger Jr’s tenure as publisher, the Times has been awarded 61 Pulitzer Prizes, a record for any publisher or news organization.
