Gaumont, the French producer of Netflix’s Narcos, is expanding into Germany, launching a regional production operation to deliver original local-language series.
Sabine de Mardt, formerly director of fiction and film at Warner Bros. International TV Production, will head up the new operation, which will be based in Cologne and launch July 1. De Mardt will report directly to Gaumont vice CEO Christophe Riandee.
Riandee said the German expansion was a logical development with “today’s audiences around the globe now used to watching shows in the original language, we also anticipate strong demand for these programs from our overseas partners.” Netflix and Amazon have already dipped their toes in local-language production in Germany, with original series Dark and You Are Wanted, respectively. De Mardt was a co-producer on You Are Wanted.
Before joining Warner Bros, she worked as managing director for production group Eyeworks Fiction Cologne and Eyeworks Film Gemini. Her production credits include the long-running German crime series Marie Brand and Wilsberg, both of which ran on public network ZDF.
De Mardt said in Germany, Gaumont would “invest heavily in the development and production of premiere drama programming, working together with first-class writers, directors, actors and creative executives.”
Gaumont is currently in production on the fourth season of Narcos.
