15 Bugs Named After Celebs

News recently broke indicating a newly discovered species of beetle (called the Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi) was named after Oscar-winner (finally!) Leonardo DiCaprio – a fitting honor, considering the actor’s work toward environmental conservation. In any case, it got us wondering how many other celebrities might have a bug or insect named after them or in honor of them. And after some research we realized the number is higher than most would probably believe. Stars like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Mick Jagger, and Shakira are among the many who have bugs named after them. 1. Leonardo DiCaprio

A beetle called the Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi is named after Leo.

2. Beyoncé 

The horse fly Scaptia beyonceae is named after Beyonce.

3. Lady Gaga

The Aleiodes gaga wasp is named after Lady Gaga.

4. Shakira

The Aleiodes shakirae wasp is named after Shakira.

5. Kate Winslet

The Agra katewinsletae beetle is named after Kate Winslet.

6. Marilyn Monroe

The Norasaphus monroeae trilobite is named after Marilyn Monroe.

7. Jim Parsons

The Euglossa bazinga orchid bee is named after Jim Parsons.

8. Emilia Clarke

A sea slug called the Tritonia khaleesi is named after Emilia Clarke.

9. Pink Floyd

The Pink Floydia spider was named after Pink Floyd.

10. Bob Marley

The Desis bobmarleyi – a spider – is named after Bob Marley.

11. Mick Jagger

The now extinct Anomphalus jaggerius snail was named after Mick Jagger.

12. Elvis Presley

The Paradonea presleyi spider is named after Elvis Presley.

13. Barack Obama

The Paragordius obamai horsehair worm is named after Barack Obama.

14. Pearl Jam

The Paramaka pearljam mayfly is named after Pearl Jam.

15. Tobey Maguire

The Anatoma tobeyoides snail is named after Tobey Maguire.
