Bacillaria is a genus of diatom in the Bacillariaceae family. This genus may contain one or more species, although it seems only bacillaria paxillifera is the only species recorded in plankton.
From the girdle, the cells appear in colonies and are rectangular. The colonies slide amongst each other to form a linear array and retract to form a tabular array.
Genus seems to have cosmopolitan distribution.
