Sleeping with your eyes wide open is an art every working class hero has mastered. Here are a few non-caffeinated ways to work around those sleepy afternoons at the desk.

Don't act like you've never sleep-worked. We've all been there--droopy eyes, fingers typing away, working in auto-pilot mode, dozing off with eyes kinda open, realising you've actually been sleeping the past 20 minutes, rechecking everything you just typed--you know, the usual afternoon on your desk.

And what do we do when we realise those eyes just won't stay open any longer? We reach out for coffee, obviously, without realising how much harm those endless cups of coffee everyday are causing us.

So, how do we trick our brilliant-albeit-sleepy minds to rev up again and make it safely out of yet another workday? Here's how:

1. Call your mom
Not only will this wake your brain up in an attempt to watch what you say, it will also make her happy. What kind of child calls up his/her mother randomly? An adarsh child.
Two birds, one stone.

2. Watch a horror movie trailer
This one's a no-brainer. Sleepy? Scared yourself to death. Simple. Shake your brain awake with those goosebumps.

3. Talk to a random stranger in the office
You know how all our defences are at work when we talk to a person we haven't established a comfort level with? Yeah, that. Use your body and brain's natural reactions to your advantage--high time!

4. Go out, stand in the sun for 5 minutes
Return to the air-conditioned office all sweaty and thirsty and see if you're still sleepy. Our guess is, you'd be too irritated to even think of sleep.

5. Flip your head upside-down
Stand up from your chair, keep your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your upper body all the way to the floor, and try and look at what's behind you from between your legs. This sudden rush of blood flow to the head will make sure sleep runs away with its tail between its legs.

Also, do us a favour and rise slowly when you decide to resume normal, standing position. A sudden movement might make you feel light-headed or dizzy.

6. Bite into a lemon
Yes, we all love nimbu paani (lemonade), but drinking that is a pleasant experience that will NOT wake you up. So, walk up to the canteen/pantry and ask for half a lemon. Simply, without thinking twice, bite into the damn thing and feel your senses light up!

7. Have 5/6/7 of those strong mints

Going on a date requires just a couple of mints. Getting through a midweek work afternoon requires 7. Let the minty freshness unclog that brain and wipe away that haze your mind is clouded with when sleepy. You can thank us later.
