Cecilie Levy have been affiliate with the PhD programme FILMART at INN University and will defend her artistic research work on 24 November.

She has focused on language and narrative, and the change from narrative in time in film, to narrative in space in VR.

She has done that through the artistic research project "Light from aside A screenwriter's perspective in virtual reality".

Central to the research is the conceptualization and partial production of the VR experience "Finding Frida".

"'Finding Frida' is a reconstruction of a personal story – that of forgotten artist Frida Hansen’s life and art – and combines linear storytelling devices with spatial ‘dreamscapes’, giving the spectator access to the protagonist’s private memory world," writes Levy to inn.no.

The research draws alternately on script theory and practice as a screenwriter, in addition to creative, documentary approaches to work with room-scale VR design.

"In its final form, 'Finding Frida' will be a room-scale experience for one person at a time, lasting approximately 20 minutes. The experience will be available to a general audience, including those with no previous experience with VR," according to Levy.

A trial scene (a so-called "vertical slice") from the VR experience was presented publicly at the Norwegian Film School and at Qvisten XTND in Oslo in June 2023. The trial scene lasts seven minutes, and was subsequently made available as an experience at the VR lab at The Norwegian Film School in Oslo.

Together with an essay that elaborates on the process surrounding the transition from narrative in time in film, towards narrative in space in VR, the cross-section from "Finding Frida" constitutes Cecilie Levy's doctoral work in artistic research.

"The essay conveys insight from a screenwriter's perspective about the challenges of the transition from temporal to spatial narrative in VR, as well as the work with narrative and stylistic choices in a technically complex and innovative VR experience," writes Levy.
