Questions such as: “Where are you going on your holidays?” and “Who last cut your hair?” are banned at Jim Hatton’s simply decorated salon on Ranelagh’s Dunville Avenue, where the emphasis is on affordable luxury. He learned his craft under Neville Russell in Terenure. Hatton believes in the neighbourhood salon and has built on that credo by serving really good coffee, welcoming kids and running pensioner afternoons. “We offer a sense of escapism, a place where you can feel special,” he explains.

His salon has established itself as the go-to parlour for the blow-dry brigade. Consultation and client care are key. Hatton knows everyone and spends time talking to his neighbours and extensive circle of friends and clients.

Hatton comes from a family of barbers who’ve been cutting hair for six generations. Thanks to his charisma and skill, he is now welcoming third-generation clients into the Ranelagh salon.

"Getting this award is really gratifying because readership of the Irish Times in the salon is huge," Hatton says. "The power of that readership is remarkable. I was thrilled to be one of the top 50 shops shortlisted – I gained five new clients from being selected and had numerous cards and calls from clients wishing me well."
