Neofundulus ornatipinnis, Myers, 1935

History

N. paraguayensis (Eigenmann and Kennedy, 1903) and N. ornatipinnis Myers, 1935, both annual, belong to the genus Neofundulus Myers (1924). Their status has been so confused that, on the one hand some authors have synonymized them, while on the other Parenti (1981), in her cladistic revision of the Cyprinodonts, used the two species as the types of two different genera, one unnamed. The type localities of N. paraguayensis and N. ornatipinnis have respectively the following geographical coordinates: 24.82S; 54.06W and 23.42 S; 58.32 W (Huber, 1994), each other distant by 170 kms. Despite this relative proximity and similar color patterns, the brazilian ichthyologist Wilson Costa (1988, 1992) has kept valid the two taxa, after having reviewed the genus and described 2 then 1 new brasilian species.
