TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY...LUIS MIGUEL

Puerto-Rican born Mexican singer and record producer Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri was born 53 years ago and has 3 children.

From a very young age, Luis’ dad who was a singer, motivated him to pursue a singing career and Luis used to watch all movies, performances and listen to songs by rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis Presley.

In 1982, when he was just 11 years old, Miguel had his first album named ‘Un Sol’ released.  It was an immediate success and 2 years later he began touring Latin American countries and issued 3 more albums.  In 1985, Luis participated in Italy’s San Remo Music Festival and placed second with the song ‘Noi Ragazzi di Oggi’. 

Luis, nicknamed ‘El Sol de Mexico’, is considered as one of the best-selling Latin artists of all time and his records sold 60 million copies globally.  His best album ever, ‘Romance’, which was released in 1991 and helped him achieve international stardom, alone sold 7 million records around the world.   

In 1993, Frank Sinatra, in honour of his 80th birthday, invited Luis to perform live in duet in a special TV programme, alongside stars like Natalie Cole and Stevie Wonder.

To date, Miguel released 21 studio albums, which most of them peaked to number one in many Latin American countries.  These apart from another 35 albums spread amongst compilation, live and soundtracks, plus remixes, re-issues, extended plays, box sets and over 85 singles.

Additionally, Luis also won numerous awards during the course of his career, namely 6 US  Grammy & 6 Latin Grammy, 3 World Music and 14 Billboard Latin Music, amongst many others.
