Well, it looks like Disney is using their Golden Boy to take on another franchise, only this one is from a Galaxy Far, Far Away. Super Producer Kevin Feige has been tapped to help develop a new Star Wars film. Feige is a known Star Wars fan and it makes perfect sense that Disney would be eager to see what he can do with the franchise as it prepares to close out the Skywalker Saga this year with STAR WARS: THE RISE OF THE SKYWALKER.

Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn had this to say about the deal:

"We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together."

With the shakiness that followed the direction of the Star Wars franchise after STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI left audiences divided and the box office underperformance (and behind-the-scenes drama) of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, it seems like some new blood could help rejuvenate things and the producer of the number one movie of all time isn't a bad start. However, don't get your hopes up that this means Kennedy will be stepping down. According to THR, she's sticking around and renewed her contract for three more years back in 2018.

It's unknown what Feige will be pursuing in the Star Wars universe, be it a solo film or franchise starter, but he does have a specific star in mind for a specific role, says a THR source:

"One knowledgeable source says Feige has told a major actor that there’s a specific role he would like that person to play if and when he makes the movie."

Other Star Wars projects in the works are a new feature from Game of Thrones' David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, a new trilogy from director Rian Johnson and three new series for Disney Plus, including Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian, A ROGUE ONE prequel series starring Diego Luna and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor.

What do you think? Is this a smart move by Disney to help the divisive Star Wars franchise find its footing again or is it simply an attempt to make the Star Wars universe a more cohesive MCU-style one? Can't say that sounds too terrible given some of the films we've seen since Lucas forked over the franchise (which he apparently isn't too happy about, direction-wise).

The next Star Wars film to hit theaters will be STAR WARS: THE RISE OF THE SKYWALKER on December 20th, 2019, while The Mandalorian series kicks off on Disney + November 12th, 2019.
