Guam triumphs at David Cup

Guam's Camden Camacho, shown in this file photo from June 2019, was victorious twice during Davis Cup tournament action in Amman, Jordan. Camacho won his singles match, and teamed with Derek Okuhama for a doubles victory, taking two of three Guam matches and the overall win against Mongolia. The event runs from Sept. 11-14 in Jordan.

Team Guam beat Mongolia 2-1 at the Davis Cup, known as the world cup of tennis, in Amman, Jordan.

Jordan is hosting the Asia/Oceania Group IV event in Amman for the event, which runs Sept. 11-14. Competing in Jordan along with the hosts are Pacific Oceania, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Cambodia, Mongolia, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Guam, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Guam is in Pool C with the host Jordan, Mongolia and Turkmenistan. Guam is tied with Jordan at 1-0 and only the winner of the pool will advance for further play. The two best nations will advance to the Asia/Oceania Group III in 2020.

Against Mongolia, Guam's Camden Camacho won his singles match in a tight contest, defeating Tamir Ankhbayar 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Camacho also teamed up with Derek Okuhama to defeat the pair from Mongolia in doubles, 7-5, 6-3.

Guam's Christopher Cajigan lost to Mongolia's Duurenbayar Erdenbayar 6-2, 6-3 in Guam's only other match. Also on Team Guam is Joshua Cepeda, who didn't play. Torgun Smith is Guam's team captain.

Round robin pool play will continue until Sept. 13 in Jordan. Playoffs are scheduled for Sept. 14.
