Location: Niederzissen, Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
During the activities of the Bausenberg volcano, which lasted only a few weeks, a cinder cone built up. Inside, the lava bubbled, rupturing the weakest area to the north of the rim of the cone and then flowing out as a lava flow. This gave the volcanic structure its typical horseshoe shape. The hiking trail leads over the edge of an extinct volcano: Bausenberg is the best preserved horseshoe crater in Germany and home to many rare plants and animals.The view from up here is wonderful and hang-gliders occasionally use the slope for their take-offs.
