Tips
  • The Glaner Braut is an archaeological site near Dötlingen in the Wildeshausen district. The four tombs are made of large stones and were created between 3,500 and 2,800 BC. They give an insight into the culture, customs and ideology of Neolithic society.

  • The Glaner Braut is a collection of four large stone graves on a sandy, heather-covered elevation on the left bank of the Hunte near Dötlingen. The delightful path from Dötlingen to the graves leads through the Hunteniederungen. Their location and monumentality make them visible from afar. The addition of “bride” to the name has not been passed down in the history of its origins.

With a length of 50 m and a width of 6 to 8 m, grave I is the largest of the group of four. The enclosure consists of a rectangular barren bed. Almost all of the surrounding stones have been preserved. However, the chamber positioned in the western part of the grave has significant flaws. Not a single capstone and only a few bearing stones can be seen.

The grave II, which is at right angles to grave I and only a few meters away, has the same type of rectangular barren bed with a small chamber. Its dimensions are somewhat more modest at 30 m in length. The bearing stones of the chamber are complete; however, all but one of the capstones is missing.

Due to the lack of an enclosure, grave III, which is a bit out of the way, appears at first glance to be smaller than its neighbors. Its chamber measures 6 x 2 m and is better preserved than in grave I and II. Three of the four capstones are still there. Due to its very poor state of preservation, grave IV has not been included in the Route of Megalithic Culture.
