Osterwall – Zeuge der Wikingerzeit
Osterwall – Zeuge der Wikingerzeit
Hiking Highlight
Location: Windeby, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
You would actually pass by here without knowing that you are walking along a 1,500-year-old defensive wall. The Osterwall is the eastern part of the Danewerkes. In the Viking Age, Danes, Friesians, Saxons and Slavs met here in the border region between Scandinavia and Central Europe. The Danes began to expand the Danewerk as a southern border fortification. The Osterwall runs over a length of 3.5 kilometers via Kochendorf to the Windebyer Noor.

The Windebyer Noor has a lot to offer: The former Eckernförder Kleinbahn, an old watermill, secluded paths, great trees, a glacial boulder and much more!

The Osterwall at Windebyer Noor:
50 m west of here you can see a small piece of wall in the grove to the right of the path; further up to Kochendorf it looks like a small kink. It stretches a total of 4 km from the Windebyer Noor to the marshy lowlands of the Osterbek; in individual sections it has been preserved west of Porzellandorf up to a height of 4 m. A heritage-protected old Viking-age path provides a clear view of the western section over long stretches and finally crosses it in a hollow-path-like section near Dürwade.
The Osterwall consisted of a ditch and a wall with a palisade and was similar to the north wall of the Danewerk, which was built at the same time.
