The windswept, rounded, green wilds of the Cheviots reach their second highest point on Hedgehope Hill. In contrast, the range’s highest point has a much flatter, more extensive summit and more gradual sides, meaning that hikes to Hedgehope Hill arguably take you to a much more prominent viewpoint than that of the Cheviot itself.
In fact, the summit views are gloriously panoramic, full of the rugged romance of true, untamed border country. The most obvious and impressive single object is the grand whaleback of the Cheviot seen beautifully across the depths of the Harthope Valley. This is especially so when its crest is dusted with snow.
Walking routes to Hedgehope Hill can be combined with its parent, though it makes for a glorious outing on its own, full of scenic interest. There’s sumptuous woodland to explore, scenic burns to cross and huge skies to enjoy.
The town of Wooler is often referred to ‘the Gateway to the Cheviots’ and is the best base for accommodation and supplies.

Hedgehope Hill is not as rounded as its parent peak, the Cheviot. This means that it arguably gives a better panorama than its higher neighbour, which is seen beautifully across Harthorpe Valley. As the second highest peak in Northumberland, it's certainly worth exploring. Rugged border country at its best.

At 2,343 feet (714 m) high, Hedgehope Hill affords picture-perfect panoramic views over the landscape. On a fine day, you can see as far as Blyth from the summit, which is 40 miles (60 km) away.
