The 10 Greatest Moments of Tim Thomas as an Islander

As his Islanders tenure comes to an end, we look back at all the iconic moments Tim Thomas had wearing the blue and orange.

On Feb. 7, the Islanders made the bold move to trade for Tim Thomas, one of the most decorated goalies in the NHL over the last decade. The acquisition created a buzz around the Islanders and added an element of excitement to an already intriguing team.

After an eventful season, one in which the Islanders snapped a six-year playoff drought, Thomas will become a free agent on July 5 and look to play elsewhere next season.

So let's take a look back at all the signature, iconic moments of this Islanders legend.

FEBRUARY

February 14: Islanders 4, Rangers 3 (SO). Riding a five-game losing streak, the Islanders rally from two goals down to beat their bitter rivals at Madison Square Garden on John Tavares' shoot-out winner. For the first time, Thomas takes part in a long-standing Islanders fan tradition by turning the game off after the first period.

February 21: Islanders 4, Canadiens 3 (OT). Thomas Hickey lives every Canadian boy's dream, scoring his first NHL goal in overtime as the Islanders shock the Habs. At home in Colorado, Tim Thomas also lives a dream and finally has dinner with conservative pundit Glenn Beck, who was recently hired as a maître d' at the posh Denver eatery Ristorante Bichette.

February 23: Islanders 4, Sabres 0. The Islanders shut out the Sabres and go 6-for-6 on the penalty kill. Thomas celebrates the win by killing six woodchucks that had been tearing up his lawn for weeks.

MARCH

March 5: Islanders 6, Canadiens 3. The Islanders stride into Montreal and come out with a dominating win over the heavily-favored Habs. Thomas finishes the game in his underground bunker watching a re-run of Chopped.

March 16: Islanders 4, Panthers 3. After blowing a three-goal lead, the Islanders beat the Panthers on Casey Cizikas' late game-winner. In a field in New Jersey, Thomas stars in his own statement win, leading a regimen of Revolutionary War re-enactors in a staging of 1778's Battle of Monmouth.

APRIL

April 9: Islanders 4, Flyers 1. The Islanders beat Philadelphia, effectively killing the Flyers' playoff hopes. Thomas updates his Facebook page with some funny baby gifs.

April 11: Islanders 2, Bruins 1. Josh Bailey scores twice and the Islanders beat Thomas' former Bruins teammates in Boston. After the game, Thomas credits a bible verse from the Book of Galatians for inspiring him, but then realizes the passage was just some old Whitesnake lyrics.

April 23: Hurricanes 4, Islanders 3 (SO). The Islanders lose to Carolina in a shootout, but the point gained clinches their first playoff berth since 2007. Thomas shaves off his mustache and immediately regrets it.

MAY

May 7: Islanders 6, Penguins 4. The Islanders even their playoff series with Pittsburgh at two games apiece with a stirring win in front of an electric Nassau Coliseum crowd. Thomas hears from his neighbor's kid's babysitter's boyfriend that the Islanders are actually pretty good.

May 11: Penguins 4, Islanders 3 (OT). Brooks Orpik scores in overtime for Pittsburgh in Game 6, eliminating the relentless Islanders from the Stanley Cup playoffs. Thomas begins planning his NHL comeback in earnest, setting his sights on returning to the league and giving stability, veteran savvy and extraordinary physical abilities to an up-and-coming team that's close to challenging for a championship. A team like the Colorado Avalanche.

It's been a fun ride, Tim. Sorry you didn't want to come along.
