#CottonRevolution: Brazil meets USA at the top In an #unprecedented #agricultural feat, #Brazil is on the verge of sharing the top spot with the #UnitedStates as the world's leading #cotton #exporter. The 2024 cotton planting season has just ended, covering an impressive area of 1,870 million hectares, a 12% increase from the previous year. Despite facing tough #competition from synthetic fibers, Brazil's cotton industry is making #significant #strides in #sustainability and #production #efficiency. Cotton production in Brazil is using significantly more #biological #solutions than any other country, from #soil and #foliar amendments to #semiochemical for #cropprotection. After protests, USGS will reinstate reporting on farm use of 400 pesticides Science Magazine reports that the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)) has retracted its plan to limit the scope of its #pesticide use reports after facing protests from the #scientificcommunity. This #database has been essential for tracking the use of approximately 400 #agriculturalchemicals in the U.S. since 1992. The agency intended to reduce the number of #chemicals tracked and update the database every five years instead of annually. This plan was met with resistance from around 250 #scientists and 120 #organizations, which resulted in letters to the @USGS urging the reinstatement of the full reports, pivotal in over 500 peer-reviewed studies. The USGS reversed its decision on February 27, 2024 committing to continue the annual publication of preliminary data for these compounds, with the promise to release 2018–2022 data in 2025. Despite the resolution, concerns remain regarding the 2015 decision to stop tracking pre-planting #seedtreatments with #pesticides—a growing #agricultural #practice . The scientific community hopes the USGS will address this gap and restart the collection of such important #data. The more we know, the better we will navigate towards a more sustainable and bountiful agriculture. El Niño cria condições ideais para super-ataques de lagartas no Brasil À medida que navegamos pelos desafios trazidos pelo fenômeno El Niño, a comunidade agrícola Brasileira enfrenta uma ameaça formidável: a proliferação de lagartas, especialmente nas grandes culturas. A combinação de altas temperaturas e alta umidade está criando a ‘tempestade perfeita’ para o crescimento acelerado de populações de pragas-chave, incluindo Spodoptera frugiperda e Helicoverpa armigera, entre outras.   Essas pragas não são apenas um inconveniente; elas representam um risco significativo para nosso principal produto agrícola, a soja, projetada para superar 162 milhões de toneladas na safra 2023/2024, segundo a Conab.
