Dr. Inez Beverly Prosser was the first Black woman to earn a PhD in psychology. She earned her doctoral degree at the University of Cincinnati in 1933. Her dissertation investigated the impact of segregation on the social-emotional and academic development of African American students. She concluded that black children fared better in segregated schools with black classmates and black teachers, controversial conclusions in the decades leading to the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision in 1954. Dr. Prosser died in a car accident in 1934 at age 38, only a year after earning her PhD. In her short life, she was a tenacious advocate for the education of women and Black people. https://lnkd.in/eFgw4KrN #WomenInScience University of Cincinnati

As women in STEM, we constantly seek to cultivate our resilience to reduce our daily stress, shatter stereotypes, stand up for our rights and gain more visibility. Improved resilience helps us to ground and create time for ourselves which in turn boosts our self-confidence. Our hike and workshop will not only bring like-minded individuals together but also help us learn mindfulness practices to improve our resilience. Together, with the beauty of the evocative landscape of The Arnold Arboretum, we will learn about the practice of mindfulness — the capacity to be fully present to ourselves and the world around us — and then explore this quality of attention as we enter a contemplative relationship with both our inner and outer nature. We will discover how nature supports cultivating expanded states of joy, wonder, and a loving connection with oneself, others, and the larger web of life to improve our resilience. Our leader will be Barbara Hamm, Psy.D., consultant and psychotherapist with immense experience in trauma and mindfulness training. No meditation experience is required simply a willingness to stay curious, attentive and open to being in a new way.
