Over the years, I learned the value of having “skin in the game” by giving your time, talent, and treasure without requiring anything in return. Show yourself to care and value the people in the community. You must consistently be visible and willing to roll up your sleeves and work alongside those who have been toiling for years in service to residents. Volunteer at trusted communities, churches, and grassroots organizations, share your experience and expertise on committees and boards, or as an advisor. In a nutshell, the return on your investment of skin in the game is invaluable. You will gain the trust of the people you hope to serve.
