How can you motivate team members who resist change?
Jeff Hiatt wrote a good book called ADKAR - How To Implement Change. The 5 tenets are: Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability & Reinforcement. A few nuggets from the book are: To implement change, you have to create "Awareness" of why the change is needed through a communication plan. "Desire" or "what's in it for me?" All levels of leadership need to be able to explain why the change is good for their individual employees. Without creating "Desire" your change plan is at risk. "Reinforcement" is a critical step. Change is not a one and done activity. You need to have a post- implementation assessment whether your change was implemented as designed and a check-in process with your employees on how they are doing with the change.

How do you use SMART goals to motivate team members?
In my experience, this is another competency Sr. Leaders need to coach their direct report leadership team. Calibrating with your leadership team around the true meaning of each part of the SMART framework is critical for individual and organizational success. If a leadership team does not spend enough time getting this right, they run the risk of losing credibility with the teams they lead and not consistently achieving the organizational goals they set. Senior leaders who devote time to coaching their leadership team up will be paid back with huge dividends and then some!
