Thursday 22 February 2018. Beverly Hills, CA. An honor to grab lunch with Lynn Cain, former Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams running back. Ole #21 looks half his age and is in the market for his next gridiron coaching opportunity. In 1980, Cain was a key cog in Atlanta's first divisional titlists, the 12-4 NFC West champions.

Every person with whom we come into contact impacts our lives. For the Harreld family of Atlanta (patriarch my father C.B. "Mike" Harreld) no one continues to mean more than the late Warren Y. Jobe, Sr., who Saturday died in his sleep at his home in the Georgia capital. A retired longtime Southern Company executive, Mr. Jobe, who spoke with a mesmerizingly soothing North Carolina accent, later served on myriad corporate boards. Throughout his long life, Mr. Jobe championed countless Peach State philanthropic endeavors; he also championed people, identifying talent and providing opportunity. One such beneficiary is my father, who, in the early 1980s, Mr. Jobe hired away from Arthur Andersen, tapping Dad comptroller of Georgia Power, thus sparking Dad's long Southern Company career. Thank you, Mr. Jobe. Your vision and kindness has profoundly positively impacted so many. To Warren's wife Sally, his sons Warren, Jr., and Coop, and the entire Jobe family, I mourn with you, honoring an elegant, soft-spoken, brilliant husband, father, and leader. Warren Y. Jobe spent a career ensuring a booming Sun Belt had plentiful, affordable electricity. May the Good Lord task your great patriarch with keeping Southern Skies a perfect Carolina Blue!

Testament to perseverance: Jared Walker (right foreground, light grey shirt) has bashed 12 homers in his first 34 games at advanced A ball for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. The 2014 5th-round pick has overcome foot injuries as a pro and a difficult childhood that included the loss of both parents. A fellow native Atlantan, Walker, more than two decades my junior, has taught me much about the game of life. Let's keep an eye on this rising Dodger corner infield farmhand. Also pictured in this 2016 Ogden Raptors snapshot from the lobby of a Grand Junction, CO, hotel: stud L.A. infield prospect and 2016 1st-round pick Gavin Lux (left, travel pillow en tow) and current Philadelphia Phillies assistant hitting coach, Pedro Guerrero (background, dark grey shirt). #Dodgers #OgdenRaptors #MiLB #Phillies

Saturday night 23 June 2018. Sheridan, WY. Honored to serve as a judge for the Miss Wyoming Pageant. Congratulations to winner Becky Bridger, who will represent Forever West this September in Atlantic City at the Miss America competition. Bridger's talent is singing -- and she has serious pipes! #MissWyoming #MissAmerica #Wyoming #Pageants

Congratulations to Wyoming’s 2018 4A (largest classification) Boys Basketball State Champions, the Campbell Co. (AKA “Gillette”) Camels, a program with an unequaled Equality State tradition. When a new high school was built just as Gillette’s population shrank thanks to economic hard times, many predicted hardscrabble days ahead for Coach Bubba Hladky’s purple and gold powerhouse. But the steely Razor City cagers showcased skill and tenacity evocative of the region’s irrepressibly resilient culture of tangible achievement; the Camels flashed iconic frontier spirit to add even more hardware to an already overflowing trophy case. Wyoming, wild, wide, and often desolate, offers a diverse array to genteel tourists. Jackson, for sure, is more aesthetic, Cheyenne is the capital, Casper is bigger, Evanston is more accessible, and Laramie has the state’s lone university. But if you want an unfiltered, atavistic taste of the pioneering Old West, tether your mechanical horse for a spell in quintessentially Cowboy State Campbell County.

Effort. Authenticity. And, yes, humility. I saw all three Monday from the Heisman winner. Baker Mayfield's post-game comments were real, contemplative, and astonishingly gracious. Wishing the walk-on-turned-superstar all the best on Sundays!
