On Feb 27th, 2024, exactly seven years after I stepped first into the Global Commons Situation Room at the Global Environment Facility and laid the foundations for the Global Commons Alliance, I will move on to my next venture.
I want to thank Naoko Ishii, Inger Andersen, Andrew Steer, Dominic Waughray, Johan Rockström, Nebojsa Nakicenovic and Nigel Topping, CMG for their leadership at the outset of the Global Commons Alliance - they were our original Leadership Council - and for having created the sandbox that all of us could play in. My deep gratitude goes also to the early supporters that provided the risk capital, especially Kristian Parker, André Hoffmann, the Brenninkmeijer family and the Global Environment Facility. The idea of tackling everything all at once - a holistic approach - was crazy enough for them to bet on it.
I am grateful to all of them and everyone that came after and played along. I had the time of my life - enjoying serious play for the common good.
I thrive in moments when everything is possible. I love when chaos still trumps the organized and gives rise to the unexpected. Nothing excites me more than when collaborators take the future that they want to see into their own hands and charge forward. I am a strong believer in group genius and love to unleash it for the common good. There was plenty of that with the Global Commons Alliance.
I am also grateful to the Steering Committee and my colleagues at the Global Commons Alliance who have helped with the current evolution and hand-over of the leadership to Jane Madgwick. This was an acknowledgment of the fact that every venture goes through different phases, requiring different leadership.
Once a planetary steward, always a planetary steward! I will always be a believer in the common good, a fan of the Global Commons Alliance and an advocate for it.
I hope you will also continue to support the mission of the Global Commons Alliance. Because whoever we are, wherever we are, it’s our shared responsibility to safeguard the global commons.
