One of the books that has inspired and continues to guide the work we do at AugMend has been the revolutionary work of Brennan Spiegel, MD who has gathered the innovations, limitations and key benefits that virtual reality (VR) can bring to healthcare and its impacts on our mental health. Dr Spiegel has envisioned the powers VR can have in bridging the gap in treatment options when other alternatives fail. He has highlighted its superior benefits in managing pain, anxiety, healing of trauma and even visceral reactions that could not be atoned by medication. My favorite part of the book is when he recounts the story of Erin, the first mother to use VR to help in delivering her child. She was able to avoid a peridural anesthesia by using a virtual reality mindfulness environment where she lost track of time and was able to avoid pain during the 2 hours leading up to the birth of her child. Here is a summary of the key points from the book. - VR has the potential to transform the way we treat various medical conditions, from pain management to mental health disorders. - VR therapy can provide an immersive and interactive experience that can be tailored to the needs of each individual patient, making it a highly personalized treatment approach. - VR therapy has been shown to be effective in treating chronic pain, phobias, PTSD, and anxiety disorders, among others. - VR therapy can also be used for rehabilitation and physical therapy, helping patients recover from injuries and surgeries faster. - VR therapy can be used in conjunction with traditional treatments, such as medication and talk therapy, to enhance their effectiveness. - VR technology is becoming more accessible and affordable, making it a promising tool for medical professionals to use in their practices. However, more research is needed to fully understand the long-term benefits and potential risks of VR therapy, as well as how to best integrate it into medical practice. Importantly it is still unclear how the design of various environments, their level of detail, realism, abstraction and artistic qualities may impact people in different ways. This will require ongoing research and innovation to realize its full potential, which we plan to do at AugMend Health.
