As healthcare professionals, we all strive to provide the best care possible for our patients. When it comes to treating patients with advanced heart failure, the goal is not only to keep them alive but to also improve their quality of life. This is where the use of innovative technologies like the Impella 5.5 comes in.
We recently had a patient who was suffering from advanced heart failure and was in need of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). However, the patient's heart was too weak to undergo the traditional LVAD implantation procedure. This is where SALMAN AL DABBOUS CARDIC CENTER team led by Prof.Tarazi decided to use the Impella 5.5 as a bridge to a permanent LVAD.
The Impella 5.5 is a minimally invasive temporary ventricular support device, which can be placed percutaneously in the catheterization laboratory or in the operating room. The device is designed to provide circulatory support for patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction, and is capable of delivering up to 5.5 liters of blood flow per minute.
By using the Impella 5.5, we were able to gradually wean our patient off of the ventilator and the inotropic support. This allowed the patient's heart to rest and recover while still maintaining adequate cardiac output. After several days of support, our patient was successfully weaned from the Impella 5.5 and was implanted with a permanent LVAD.
The use of the Impella 5.5 as a bridge to a permanent LVAD is a testament to the advancements in heart failure management. This technology provides a less invasive and more gradual approach to circulatory support, which can be especially beneficial for patients who are not candidates for traditional LVAD implantation.
