March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month 💙 Cancer of the colon and/or rectum is the 2nd leading cause of cancer related death in America and worldwide 🌎. It is the 3rd most diagnosed cancer among men and women. This accounts for almost 10% of all cancer cases. Several Lifestyle factors contribute to the development of colorectal cancer such as high intake of processed meats and low intake of fruits and vegetables, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. Ways to reduce your risk are implementing primary prevention strategies such as adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding risk factors, practicing early detection through screening( colonoscopy) (most cases occur in individuals older than 50 years of age) Unavoidable risk factors are family history of colorectal cancer, family history of Lynch Syndrome, and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) certain types of colon polyps increase risk as well. April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month, so I wanted to share some information about this illness and any steps we can take to reduce risk. If you didn't know, esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cause of cancer death in men (it's more common in men, but women also contract this type of cancer). What are the most common causes? Smoking and chronic acid reflux are the top two risk factors, but alcohol use and obesity are also risk factors. What can you do to reduce your risk? 1) Stop smoking.  2) Manage acid reflux (make sure you talk to your healthcare provider to get help with this).  3) Consume a healthy diet and get regular exercise.  4) Limit alcohol consumption. If you happen to be in a high risk category (like having a long history of acid reflux), make sure you talk to your healthcare provider about screening options that may be available to you. Like any other health condition, early detection is key! Give me a 💙 below if you found this information helpful.
