Screenwriting Lessons From Oppenheimer #1 How To Spark Debate and Hold Tension “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.” - Ian Malcolm When watching Oppenheimer this quote kept coming to me. The tension. The controversy. The Moral ambiguity. As a writer I wanted to know how Nolan was able to convey all of this in the film. Plus, considering the result of Oppenheimer is well known , how we were still on the edge of our seat? After reading the script, I realized he used all the elements above to his advantage AND anchored the audience to the character. These writing techniques can be instrumental in big narrative storytelling. In the film, we’re locked into Oppenheimer’s POV - experiencing, learning, and going through the motions with him. Additionally, most of us aren’t aware of the exact nuance that is astrophysicists. To write scenes in which Oppenheimer breaks it down periodically is a smart move. Learning this and more in the Oppenheimer script have been really enlightening! More to come…!
