Starting triathlon was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have completed four 70.3 races, and after each one, I told myself "never again.". Same words I said after finishing 5km swimming challenge. Twice. Training for a triathlon requires six to eight training sessions per week, which makes one a careful planner. However, it has also made me more focused and less tolerant of unproductive meetings and tasks. If you feel overwhelmed with tasks during the week, try adding a 1-2 hrs of training session each day )

As part of the change and having a healthy lifestyle, I've decided to join a swimming class. In my first sessions, I was so scared of swimming in the pool's deep side. I see my colleagues swimming smoothly there and I said internally to myself: that is too difficult and dangerous and I will never do it! After some sessions, things changed. Thanks to my coach who taught me the technique, handled my fears and emotions, supported and gave me confidence. Now I can swim smoothly and confidently from and to both sides. Of course, I am not a professional swimmer yet, but I am improving and my fears are gone. This gives me proof that by having the right coach and the right learning technique added to determination, you can defeat your fears and reach your target even if it seems far, difficult, or impossible. Here's an extract: "I could talk about Gennadi and speed at length but here are some of his most important principles: Speed is the most important thing in swimming. It’s what we train for. Everything is about speed; Tension is the enemy of speed; The faster you want to go – the more relaxed you need to be. Swimmers must learn to remain relaxed as speed increases – Relaxation and Speed are directly connected; Do not assume speed will return once it is lost. For that reason, include speed training throughout the year – at all times of the training program. I learnt a lot from Gennadi but here’s the five – as he would say “most important things”: Speed is EVERYTHING; Technique is a personal thing – it’s about optimizing the technical efficiency of the stroke of the individual athlete. It’s not about just doing a lot of drills; Athletes need the opportunity to develop athletic qualities and “natural” fitness outside of their standard training environment; Dare to be different. Absolutely love this - a lot of my own training philosophies align very closely with these concepts: - The importance of speed - I beleive if you don't have relative speed over short distance, you can't have speed over long distance - we do a lot of speed work at the start of our training block, the most speed work in the first 4 weeks, and it continues in some capacity right the way through our block. - To swim fast you need to be relaxed - All of our technique work centres around two things - Catch position and Relaxed recovery - the better you can position your catch the more power you get for less effort, specifically, the more you can use muscle with large surface areas and isolate the engagement of these muscles, the less energy required for the same power output - the more relaxed your recovery, specifically, the more your stroke muscle recruitment pattern can 'switch off' muscle used in the catch, the less fatigue you get for the same work rate. - Technique is individual - I believe you work to a foundation stroke model, not a technique model - In swimming, everything affects something else, so to achieve an optimal stroke, you must individualise aspects of that stroke to the individual - this will mean different muscle recruitment patterns, catch and recovery positions, stroke lengths, stroke rates, timing, etc. based on the athlete's training priorities and dominant characteristics such as individual muscle strength, fatigue and size, aerobic capacities, mobilities etc. - Don't do what everyone else does - If you do what everyone else has always done, you'll only ever be as good as anyone else has ever been (and you probably won't even be that) - This links back to the previous point, everyone is an individual, what worked for one individual with a specific body type and training history in a specific program, will not necessarily work for another with completely different circumstances.
